Got my Saturday shopping list ready

Looks like it took £28 or so for a full Rocker outfit.

How much did an ambitious lad working his first full-time job at age 18 or so in 1962 make?

My mother gave me my first leather jacket when I was 19. That was a Big Deal at the time. It was a Schott, and I still have it

In 1969 aged 15, i was being paid £4 a week for 40 hours. 10p an hour so i had to have a duffle coat from the surplus shop. I had a used pair of gloves from a jumble sale and work boots. Helmet was a used Stadium jet. One item i did have new was a pair of goggles so i could see when riding to college in the rain

Think my first wages back in 1976 were something like £20 a week, doing an apprenticeship.

Who needs a signature anyway......

I started my apprenticeship in May 1977 - first weeks wage was £22. But that turned out to be incorrect, as I was 17 when I started, not 16 like most starting apprentices. Apprentice wages increased with age, so subsequent weeks were £28 - of which half went to my mother for board.

IIRC my final year apprentice wages were £69 a week (1981) and my first "skilled rate" job at a different company was £105 - all for 42 hour weeks IIRC.

My new CZ 250 Deluze cost £413 OTR in November 1979 - cheaper than the MZ TS250/1 I would have prefered (£525 OTR) but just affordable without a loan after being allowed £150 p/x for the MZ TS150 I was running at the time.

The Highwayman leather jacket I bought from Snide & Shark in the 70s has definitely shrunk.

Do you think I should take it back for a refund?

Started my apprenticeship in 1955, 17/6d a week, 22 mile round trip to place of work, 10/- to Mum for my keep (most of which I inviably got back for Bantam fuel to get there).
But they were Happy Daze....

I enjoyed my apprenticeship. Low paid but i learnt a lot and i had a motorcycle aged 16 then a car aged 17. Age 18 i had a Mini Cooper, age 20 i was buying my first house. That job set me up with a really good income and early retirement at 56 with a great pension fund. I would do it all again. Long hours right to the end and the last weeks work was 58 hours. Not always those hours but most weeks were around about 45 hours average.

In 1962 I was 17 and a year into a 5 year apprenticeship at at R/Royce, Bentley and Jaguar main dealer.
£3 10s 0d a week including Sat morning overtime.
I ran my Bantam to and from work on a mix of customers' petrol and Castrolite 'left over' after oil changes. Had to clear a whiskered sparkling plug most days.

I used to run a 2 stroke on a mix of petrol, paraffin and engine oil for lubricant. Made a lot of smoke and lost a bit of power but it got me places.
Half way between pay days, could not ride the bike anywhere as not enough fuel for outings.
The most difficult period was aged 18 running a Cooper at 24 MPG with insurance at 10 times my weekly wage.
