The company I work for would declare that this is unethical, and would not allow it.

Government runs by a different set of rules.......but we knew that already.

I remember a couple of people from a big customer coming to see us at our offices and they brought their own lunch with them. They were not allowed to accept hospitality from a supplier.

Some years ago, company I was associated with had a VAT inspector in; she not only brought her lunch but also her coffee or tea; she said she wasn't allowed to accept anything from the company.

Mind, I suspect some VAT inspectors also have to be concerned about being poisoned ...

you have to be really wary with VAT inpectors.
When I was in business selling bikes We got notice of a VAT inspector vist, friend in the trade said "stick him out the back in the cold" well, a dear little old lady turned up to this grubby old bike shop, my wife, being what she was, sat her down comfortably with a cup of tea, old biddy was checking the books while knitting, 'what does she know about motorbikes' I was thinking. Whe she finished she passed a remark about some bike or other to my wife,turned out the old biddy had been an active competition side car passenger in days past and was well up to speed on two wheel affairs. Bloody cunning the tax parasites. Fortunately my wife kept scruplously honest book.

Only time I suffered a VAT inspector it was very easy & civilized. We used a local self-employed independent book keeper. VAT man recognized his work and said if that was who was doing our books he knew they would be faultless. After a cursory check he proclaimed himself happy and left. Phew! Never heard from the VAT officials again! Phew again! But since then I have always been self-employed & never had a business that required me being VAT registered or to do PAYE.

I've been regularly criticised by professional accountants for advising companies to put tax receipts in a separate account and never touching it, "It's not your money, you are an unpaid tax collector & the Tax Man will have your guts if to are short when the bills are due."
Funnily enough a majority of the engineering companies I've fixed (after accountants recommend going bust) have had tax debts that are difficult to negotiate.

Yes, we knew that but this isn't a government matter, its party political and we all know they have no rules.......unless they get caught!

I used to get all these free gift at work, they allowed me to take some of the product home totally free. trouble being, i had nowhere to spread the cow dung at the time.

My Brother employed six electricians and VAT registered. He had a proper woman doing all the books for many years. The Inspector spent 2 days poking around and telling him it was all wrong. A doorbell was a luxury so 25 percent vat, a night storeage heater was 0 vat, new wiring was 0 vat but rewiring old wiring was 12.5 vat. This applied to labour on each task so we had to time the wiring time of each item to decide which rate applied.
After 2 days, he told the inspector he was shutting down, releasing the employees and just working for himself with no vat registration. He then spent 30 years without any vat inspectors.
Quite funny when at his funeral he had the fools and horses song played. My 3 Nephews who run the business now are all self employed individuals so still no vat registration.

I once had a tax assessment on my pension that concluded I owed 9p. Verbally, but they refused to put it in writing, I was told to ignore it. I sent a cheque for 10p with a note to keep the change. I got a giro for 1p back with a note that it was no longer allowed to run a tax account in credit.
A retired tax inspector told me some years later that the 9p outstanding could be used, if it was a bit quiet, or there was a new member of staff, or if there was a pain in the arse on the staff, to send that member of staff out to go through my books with a fine tooth comb, even though my "books" were PAYE taxed pensions!

Most of the people who run government of what ever colour ony have one rule that governs their mantra try not to get caught!!
