Another quiet Sunday

Very light traffic sounds, and the occasional motorcycle can be heard changing down to climb the small hill on the road leading to eventually become the Bruce highway running North to the Sunshine Coast and beyond. YAWN! reaching for the Merlot bottle.

A quiet day, Sunday or not is good for me having spent another week (or more) in a cardiac ward.

It's the London to Brighton 'Old crocks' run today. It passes half a mile from my house but I CBA'd to watch as I've seen 'em all over the past 20 years or so. Fewer cars taking part each year apparently.

Probably down to the owners leaving this world and no one taking on ownership, that and the expertise needed to keep them going slowly dying away.

If that were true, then pioneer and vintage cars in running condition would be selling for peanuts.

I think that if you go and try to buy one, you will find that the prices reflect a high amount of pride, rarity, and interest in them.

Every generation thinks that "We're the last ones!" and it's never ever true .... NO nice old cars and motorcycles are going into the scrap bin for lack of interest.

While investigating ways of passing on my vast wealth to my son, without Mr.Starmer grabbing most of it, I discovered that collectible cars are not liable to capital gains tax but motorcycles are. So I won’t be buying a green framed Ducati after all.

Never bought to invest accepting clocks thats a minefield now Longcase clocks that were valuable are now worth peanuts unless it's a rare one or maker. My 1780 Longcase was bought over 50 years ago for £100 was valued at over a thousand and fifty . Now prob £100. If made by Thomas Tompion prob £30.000.. or more English railway clock bought for a tenner now worth one to two hundred ..doesn't make sense..

I don't think that is true, David. Vehicles owned privately are not subject to CGT as far as I've always been aware. See Part 1 below from the horse's mouth... but, like everything (except those poverty stricken farmers who buy land, put it in trust and pass it on immediately on a short lease to the next generation to bank millions tax free- as done by friends of mine's parents) vehicles as part of your estate will be subject to IHT.

You might be right about that Lannis, but I expect a few will become museum exhibits, a lot more will become "investments", no doubt there will still be a few bimbling about the roads, but I really dont think the level of interest / expertise is there like it used to be.

I'll make a deal with you, rendevous back here in 100 years and see what's happening

I imagine that has some effect.
However, a pal who has for 20 years done the motorbike equivalent 'Pioneer Run' tells me that it has always been quickly over-subscribed until the past couple of years.

Re TUD's post a neighbour was working for the railways replacing the clockwork station clocks and taking them to a warehouse (all except about 20 which he brought home and later sold).
Incidentally, he bragged that when he retired after 35 years he had never done a proper day's work.

Lol, all relative to whether you like your job. I often felt pay was a happy bonus. For about the 50% of my career I wasn't working for nasty, bullying or incompetent bosses in fact.

Many of the very old cars are now very low cost to buy and mainly due to the lack of speed and brakes for modern traffic. From what i see of younger people, few have any idea how a car or motorcycle works.
been teaching a few Grandsons some basic repairs and 4 of them are now able to understand. They are required to watch if i mend their cars but i also have a benefit of my boys garage ramp they can use at weekends.
Its a shame young people can only use phones and not mend things we all use. All my boys know how to mend cars including engine swaps and clutches and they also now work in the car trade except one but he mends a lot of his 4 boys cars.
Most repairs are at my house as i have all the tools needed for most car repairs. Welding is done at the garage where there is more room and a ramp

Cars of the 1920s and 30s are very low cost now despite the rarity. A 1970s basic Ford Escort is normally a higher price than the older cars. There are no very old cars being driven around Devon except to the car show once a year. Nice to look at but not so much fun to drive now.
The luxury old cars will still hold value but not the working mans transport of the earlier years

You are an exception Bonny Geoff. Few grandparents or parents have your facilities or knowledge. I have the facilities and served an apprenticeship in the motor trade but I don't even think about servicing or repairing mine or my kids' modern vehicles with their cramped engine bays and complex electronics that need resetting/aligning after doing the most straightforward mechanical jobs.
Just visiting my local tip is evidence of stuff that could probably be easily repaired. I took away a couple of lawn mowers when it was permitted. One just needed a new throttle cable and the other a carb clean after which they worked fine and I sold them.

sorry to interrupt the doom and gloom,but i've just watched a you tube video of the 2024 Veteran car run..and all i could see was hundreds of people and their friends and families having a great time in the old crocks,smiling and waving people young and old,plenty of lady drivers and lot's of children onboard having a great day out.

My next door neighbour took his 1927 Sunbeam to Silverstone for the British F1Grand Prix where, amongst others, he had a Parade lap wth one of the drivers on board waving to the crowds. He also attends many other shows.

There are still a lot of people enjoying the cars and the runs as i do but it is the high values that have come down a lot. This happened in the early 90s when people were buying MK 2 and E type Jaguars for investment. That lot all got burnt fingers as the market suddenly dropped.
If i have to stop riding due to my feet being a bit useless, i might get a classic car but no earlier than a 1960s. I quite fancy a Humber sceptre 1725 with the 5 bearing crank. Always like d them in the 70s but did get the chance to have a Sunbeam Rapier convertible for a short period and a drive in a later 71 Rapier fastback. The Rootes cars had nice interiors and came pre-rusted out
