12 volts versus 12.8

I'm probably going to sell an electric golf trolley to a neighbour. It currently runs of a 12 acid volt battery which he is considering replacing with a Lithium battery at 12.8. I am aware that a fully charged acid battery would probably have 12.7+ volts but do not know much about Lithium. I said it would probably be OK . Appreciate your views.

That will work OK Den. Biggest danger is where you leave it in your house or garage. They dont all catch on fire but many have. I keep both my battery bicycles in a steel shed so any fire will not burn my house down.
Usual rules are not to leave the battery unattended when on charge if indoors or at night. Many people charge phones as they sleep but not a good idea. I also keep all my lithium drill batteries in steel cabinets.
Never had any battery problem but some people do.I expect its a low percentage but when it happens, it can destroy a house very quickly

It may not fully recharge if the trolley charger isn't configured for Lithium charging.

A quick look online suggests that lithium replacements for lead acid batteries are a "thing", so it should be fine.

I don't know anything about golf cart motor control circuits, but I would have thought even an electronic variable speed drive should be tolerant of a reasonable input over voltage. If the motor is just switched in or out by a relay (full speed on or off) then the only effect on a DC motor would be that it would run a bit faster on a higher voltage. Some of the golf cart battery suppliers suggest 14V as a terminal voltage for a lithium battery, but even that isn't too much over the 12.8V nominal of a lead acid battery.

Biggest difference in use would most likely be the discharge characteristics - a lead-acid battery would tend to slow down before grinding to a halt giving notice that the battery was getting low, where a lithium battery would perform as normal until it suddenly stopped.

As well as charging & storing a lithium battery away from anywhere or anything flammable, I understand that they cannot be charged below freezing without damage - some electric cars pre-heat the batteries (using the electricity you paid for to charge it in the first place) in cold conditions to allow the batteries to charge safely.

The fire while charging or storing thing should be taken seriously - my brother in NZ had his shed burn down due to a e-bike battery fire. If that had been in one of his previous houses with an integral garage, it would have taken the house with it.

Whare my son Graham works they turf the lithium batteries out and replace with lead acid..
Just not worth it when you have many expensive cars in the showroom.

Don't lithium batteries need a different charger? Also more prone to catching fire?

Probably, but the guy who is thinking about buying it has a Lithium battery on his own trolley ( he wants this one for his daughter that is starting to play) so he should know, but thanks I will point that out to him.

If you buy a decent charger, like the Noco 1 that i use, it charges all types. Most chargers you would buy new now would charge lithium. I charge at 1 amp maximum to keep heat low. Many smart chargers will not recognise a very low battery and will not charge it at all hence buying a quality one.

Read through that Sprid but it's all about Golf Carts, I am selling a Golf Trolley which only requires one battery not the multiple batteries referred to for the Cart. The article was interesting though as it doesn't appear to refer to any other unit changes so I think all would be fine as long as he uses the correct charger and not the one that is currently with the Trolley. By no means a wasted search though, thank you.

Ah yes. You can tell that IKabsolutelyBA about golf! It does seem it'll be O.K. to swap and use an appropriate charger.
