The KH - warning bike content

Think I have found the sources of the slipping clutch that tormented me last year.

Firstly the short part of the clutch pushrod had developed a groove in it where it goes through the oil seal and it seemed to be holding up a bit, so made up a new one from a piece of silver steel, suitably machined and hardened. New or second hand ones are not very easy to find, and any used ones I have seen have the same wear groove in them.

Secondly I noticed that the pressure plate had a wobble, unlike ancient Brits where you can adjust the springs to get the plate even, on the Kawa you just tighten all the clutch springs up until the bolts bottom out.

Double checked the springs, and found that 2 out of the 5 were made from a different gauge of wire, they also had a slightly larger O/D.

The lenghts of all 5 springs were also unequal, the largest difference was 2mm.

So when all 5 are done up as they should be, there will be unequal pressure on the pressure plate so it will be uneven.

Looks like 3 out of the 5 springs are for a KH 250 the other 2 does not seem to match any of the Kawasaki Triple clutch spring specs.

This poor old bike has been through some bodgers.

New set of springs are only around £15.

So it is now officially 'poor old bike' rather than SS (PoS) status?
Joking aside, think you'll find it very hard to part with now - is there any part of it you have not fettled?

Not sure about a dream Geoff, the KH has been a nightmare.

Think I have done my time with old Brits Den.

Might be time to just cut your losses with the 6T and move the problem on - mind you I did put the KH up for sale and I declared the problem, but got no responses even though I advertised it at a modest price.

With everything I have done to the KH I might just keep it.

I think I'm well past my time Andy but can't quite let go. I must admit my problems go beyond the enthusiasm for old bikes which will probably die with me. It's more about getting the enthusiasm for tinkering, something that has already drained from me. I find people who profess to be experts, that I have trusted in the past, and usually have to correct the expert bodges they have effected. I have been waiting for weeks, if not months for another chap who has been recommended but he just seems to forget to turn up so at the moment he is on his last chance, will not be chasing him again. If he doesn't call I will leave it until Spring. When, maybe, I will stir the enthusiasm once more.

I know what you mean Den.

The KH did a lot to kill my enthusiasm as it was a P.O.S. when I bought it - I was ripped off, but I only have myself to blame.

I told myself "it is only a machine" and that "I can fix it" so I have plodded away for many months trying to fix it up.

Hopefully your latest "man" will get the 6T up / running, if you lived nearer to me I would happily try and help you out - not an expert but a fair bit of experience over the years.

I thank you for your kind offer Andy, regrettably finding a bike shop or a reliable expert is not easy. I don't mind paying but the ones I have used down here have been a bit of an expensive let down so if the latest attempt doesn't go well then it's back to what I said "do it myself". Roll on the Spring.

Speaking for myself, I generally have many of the skills and tools I need to do my level of shop work.

Motivation is the main thing that I get when a friend comes over. Two of us can work 6 times as fast and accurately as me working by myself....

One reason why WFH really suits me, only been "in the office" twice this year.

I am a noted expert, Den, with at least three different hammers and two adjustable spanners plus a pipe wrench.

If I can't fix it I can guarantee that nobody else can... afterwards!!

Indeed the Struem Stercore moniker was dropped in the summer when it just about proved itself.

Come to think of it dont think there is anything I have not fettled.
