Another KH update

You might remember that I proudly said that I think I found the reason why the clutch was slipping intermittantly - pushrod with a groove in it, 2 different types of springs in the pressure plate.

Well that might be part of the reason.

I was putting it back together with the new springs, and just thought I would double check with the manual to make sure I was doing it right.

So there I was fitting the plates only to find I was one short, yet the clutch basket was full.

On further investigation........some idiot in the past has fitted a 250 clutch which has 1 less pressure plate.

Yet again the KH gives me another gift.

The problem is where am I going to get a 400 clutch basket from - they seem to be super rare.

With the 400 springs fitted it seems to disengage OK but you need a vice like grip to pull the lever.

Just have to hope a 400 basket comes up someplace, or it might even work with the 400 springs.

No turning back as I have sunk too much time, effort and money into it - I am also in the process of making some decent end cans for the expansion chambers - I started that a while ago.

At least it keeps me out of harm........

My son bought a Suzuki T500 Cobra, 1968, in good shape with 15,000 miles, but needs some original wear items replaced. It's at my garage at present so I'm doing a bit of work on it.

Rubber bits, tires and tubes, chain and sprockets, maybe shocks and fork seals. First gear is hard to get but maybe clutch and linkage adjustments can sort that.

Old two strokes take me back to my own youth.

Very true Lannis whenever I fire up a 2T the smell takes me back to being a teenager again.

For some reason they "smell better" on a lovely warm summers morning....

This might sound daft, but can you get the clutch basket extended.

It had crossed my mind, but I would need the correct clutch hub which has to be longer as well, and you cant really extend that.

Think I would be a bit weary of something spinning around at several thousand RPM that had been welded as well.

So not a daft suggestion, just something I think is not practical.

There is a KH400 inner basket and top on eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/356045704423 also a complete clutch but not sure if its a 250 or 400 seller lists both https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/145726367522

Thanks for the links.

The first link is to a hub and pressure plate only - it is not really an "inner basket" it is the hub.

The second link is for a 250 clutch - you can tell it is a 250 because it only has 6 friction plates in it, the 400 has 7 - bit mis leading to say KH250 / KH400.

Something will turn up eventually.
