Doesn`t everybody just do a cold wash?
In the "Good ole days" my mother had to light the copper to wash really dirty clothes like my overalls.

That jogged my memory. My mum used to boil handkerchiefs, remember them!, in an old pressure cooker bottom. I have a horrible feeling that she used to use the same pan to boil a sheep’s head for the dogs.

My Dad would eat tripe, chicken gizzards, rabbits and my Sister enjoyed dog biscuits and cat food. I preferred to eat Weetabix. 50s living was fun with no freezer and only fresh food. I did get to eat chicken neck meat though. Very nice flavour

And a copper stick Andy? My mums was a 3" diameter one that she would poke the clothes with or should I say give them a good bashing

Yes Mum had a copper stick - a long wooden one that over the years had become bleached from the washing powder.

My parents had all the labour saving appliances as they had 23 guests staying in the hotel plus 6 of us sprogs. Washing machine, clothes dryer, dishwasher, spud peeler, hot cupboard for 20 dinners, food mixers. We had some great food to eat as kids

yes Andy so did mine used it for years and not above using on me, had a new blue serge overcoat came home one saturday morning from kids pictures after playing cowboys & indians in the local huge sandpit next to the local bye pass not refined sand but natural Thames valley damp sand having slid down various out crops and tracks it was inpregnated with the sand mixed with the serge it was a slime green colour. un fortunately I walked in to the kitchen where Mum was doing the washing and wringing it out through the mangle while still to hot to touch so using said copperstick,one look at the new coat she started using it on me thank fully the coat saved me from the the pain, I loved my mum & I know she loved me after calming down and a severe verbal bollocking managed to sponge it clean
