On paper, the Guardian is the worst I've seen, even worse than our Washington Post or New York Times.

People are getting wise to a lot of it though. Viewership and circulation for the leftist rags are cratering.

And no, since Faux News is half "Austin Mom Finds One Weird Trick" or "J-Lo Stuns In Bikini Shot", I don't watch it ....

On paper, the Guardian is the worst I've seen,

The Grauniad is good for an insight into the left leaning "progressive" mindset just as the Times / Telegraph / Daily Mail / Express give insights into the right leaning / Royalist viewpoint. The Guardian owners must be suffering somewhat financially having just sold off the similarly left leaning Observer.

I skim both daily, as they are available on the Readly subscription platform I use mainly for magazines. The POV of some of the Guardian columnists (Polly Toynbee for one) comes across as dilusional & it is difficult to give them any sense of credibility. I would prefer the Times or Telegraph for a less sensationalist right leaning approach to the Express, but both of those hide behind paywalls. The Daily Mail likewise, but that isn't much more than celebrity-led gossip for light entertainment of the easily entertained. The other tabloid red-tops are not really fit for much more than wrapping fish & chips IMO.

Mrs B still looks in on Politico for background - recommended reading when she worked in Policy for a government department before retirement. She used to get a daily round-up of items of interest from all the UK papers produced for govenment departments.

I don't have much experience of US newspapers beyond USA Today & that only because it seemeed to be given away quite widely. No idea how that leans, but just like to have a look to get some kind of idea of local news when I am staying in an area - adverts can be interesting to compare cost of living items etc. I can be easily entertained !

I guess the trick with modern media is to try and work out which angle they are coming from & then look for the same story from a source that comes from another direction for a different take. The reality of a situation probably lives somewhere between the two views - maybe.

BBC ? Not got much time for them & resent having to pay them the licence fee. Certainly don't believe their impartiality claims & find most of their news coverage rather shallow - Channel 4 seems to do news better.

What you just described is what I do.

You can't build a complete picture unless you at least know what "the media" is saying, even if you recognize some of it as delusional ravings....

Otoh, both the Express and Mail have given the most widespread national publicity to the Silver Voices campaigns, not just the removal of the Winter Fuel Payment but also things like the network providers switching to digital landlines while failing to ensure all emergency gadgets that rely on landlines will work on digital.

Even if their coverage is a bit right wing and sensationalist, there are some news sources I read simply because the "Main Stream Media" will simply ignore some situations, and not report on them at all, unless they're later forced to by circumstances....

The worst one here is MSNBC. 24/7/365 "Hate Trump Destroy Trump Burn Trump Shoot Trump."

Their viewership has dropped 50% since the election. You can only lie so much before even your friends stay away....

I saw a post on FB stating the Daily Mail was losing jobs due to the demise of 'print' readership. Some wag wrote "Well don't worry, because I read in your paper that you'll get £50k a year benefits, free housing, a flat screen TV and an iphone, so you'll be OK"

Always find the media obsession with 'flat screen TVs' amusing - when was the last time you saw any other sort on sale?
Don't bother with the Mail Online nowadays due to ad blocker issues, but it always seemed obsessed with slagging off the poor & Megan Markel.

For me it's property described as having a 'Family bathroom'.............visions of Gran on the loo, Mum doing her makeup, Dad having a shower and two kids at the sink.

The work family is usually used instead of "only one".
