I will certainly have another hybrid car in 2 years as long as they make them. It works out great. Otherwise, if the taxation goes mad on these, i may get a Peugeot diesel plain engine car. French are not doing many EV cars. April sees a big change in taxation with charges if the car has a list price over 40k which mine will be. This time, EVs will have to pay road tax the same as petrol cars. The future may be to buy an old low mileage diesel car without rust, then recondition all the brakes and steering parts and run that with its low road fund charge that they had back in about 2010 when a 2 litre diesel was 30 pound tax. That has already started around here with older car owners coming in for anti corrosion spraying at the boys garage. He sand blasts any surface rust, welds any holes then treats the whole underside and these owners say it is to keep long term to avoid these high taxes. A Range Rover new in 2025 will carry a charge of over 5000 pounds. I might even just buy a luxury version of a small car which is what i have with the Toyota. That one is the Excel model but with a moon roof so top of the range at 37,000 pounds list price. I can see a lot of manufacturers just leaving out some of the silly extras to keep the cost under 40k. Right now, is a good time to buy an old good car.
A lot of French EVs on the market from all the makers & there have been for years + this year sees the launch of many more allegedly "affordable" models from both Peugeot Citroen and Renault.
Your ability to be able to get a new hybrid in a couple of years may well be down to if the manufacturers don't ration supply to ensure that they don't get fined for not meeting the EV percentage of sales requirements. This was allegedly happening in December, with delivery of firm orders for non-EV cars being delayed until the New Year to avoid £15k per vehicle fines.
I don't hold out much hope of the recently announced "consultation" on the timing or scope of the changes making any difference at all. As with most official "consultations", it will most likely conclude that "nothing will change - suck it up".
4 1/2 years to go before these clowns can be voted out !
Or before Nigel if we have a big civil war in this country. I think it may be coming. I am out a lot in pubs riding bikes etc and the unrest in our country is scary. The oldest rocker in town!
I see mostly petrol cars in the French car showrooms at the moment. None of those dealers tried to sell me an EV but Audi did with a 20k discount along with Toyota offering a BZ4X at 20k discount getting it at Corolla prices. Its all getting interesting and an EV will not be a choice at all for me as i need to arrive at places and be able to turn around and get back. My one experience with a 60k EV on a -4 day with ice on the screen needing a heater and wipers turned it into a car with 60 miles range and only at slow speed as the batteries give out lower power in the cold so i just could not use it for the short journey i was doing. I will never be forced into an EV as i will be too old when its all you can drive. I still think its odd seeing these EVs in the lorry lane on motorways tucked behind a lorry for slipstream tow and no lights on just hoping they can reach a charger. One Exmouth garage has installed an outdoor laundry so you can wash clothes as the car charges. Only one i have seen and its at Ebford, a village you pass when heading for Exeter. I may just take out an EV car for a test for 2 hours on a cold wet day and see how much battery power is left when using all its equipment, lights etc. The cheap Evs being offered by Smart and Citroen have very limited mileage. I tried quite a few Hybrids and no problems with any make. Possibly the best developed was the Renault Arkana but it was just a bit too big.
Another problem with EV car charging is the owners that try and charge them for free. We have a lot of properties used for holiday let around here and it is not unusual to see cars being charged via a cable thrown out of the window. The holidaymakers often sign booking paperwork telling them that they cant charge their car but do it anyway.
