Photos from the past

Been doing some family research and this picture was sent to me via Facebook (yes been trying to get used to it) following a request for info about my Mums Dad who is notoriousley hard to track down.

Mums Dad had a haulage business but was killed in a Steam lorry accident a month before she was born - this is a photo taken some years after his death, and after the days of steam lorries.

The guy in the picture might be her uncle or even her grandad.

Just think it is great photo.

As they say, they don`t build them like that anymore.
The photos on either side appear to be taken on a moonless night.

Makes sense using steam power when there's local coal as both fuel and cargo.....I guess it is a load of coal in the photo?

Yes it is s lorry load of coal.

Mums Uncle eventually went on to be a coal merchant.

There was a colliery a few miles away from where the picture was taken called New Rock, and it was while delivering a load of coal from that colliery that Mums Dad had the accident.

He lost control of the Sentinel steam waggon he was driving and crashed into a viaduct.

Who needs a signature anyway......

'AYA' is a Somerset reg, isn't it? Seem to recall my first bike, a babysh@t yellow/brown '72(?) CZ175 was AYA something.

Yes I think that Somerset used to be YA, YB, YC and YD before things changed.

I remember coal being delivered in the late 50s / early 60s fresh from the local pit in the Rhondda Valley.
Parents ordered a ton and it arrived as 3 lumps on the back of a truck!

Both my Dad and Grandad spent some time in the Somerset Coal mines, horrible places to work according to Dad as some had very narrow seams.

In later years when Dad was driving a lorry I used to regularly go to the Wels mines with him to pick up loads of coal, think we used to go to Merthyr mainly.

I agree, that photo was taken some time after the Steamers.

There is a rumour that one of the Steam Waggons ended up being buried on the site of where the photo was taken after my Grandads accident, if it is, it will be a nice find for someone one day.....

I do have a photo of one of the Steamers he owned, might post that one up for interest.
