Sorry to hear that. Times I've stayed in England (Derbyshire, Kent, Cornwall) there were always buses nearby that would carry you to the next town and to a railway station.

In my retired state, were I living in Two Dales or Selling or St Just, I wouldn't own a car; just a little pushbutton commuter and a neat old vintage bike for fun.

That wouldn't work out if there were no buses. There are no buses OR trains here ...

I used to get told off by Mum for always 'having my nose in a book' - my much older brothers had taught me to read before I started school.
Buses? What are they? For all we are encouraged to think 'sustainable transport' etc they are constantly cut back. The village I live in is only 6 miles from a small city in one direction, & a large town in another.
Monday-Friday 3 buses a day, none at weekends, to the city.

That's a shame. A three times a day 12 mile round trip would be a perfect application for a vaunted Electric Bus ... But no, they want to force useless electric cars on people instead.

They had great bus service on "Last of the Summer Wine".

I'm going to brag. My "Favorite Second Eldest Granddaughter" read 56 books last year. Those are "for fun" books. It doesn't count required reading for classes. She just graduated college to be a middle/high school teacher.

56! That's quite amazing - well done her. She's a brave lady going to teach in the US. I spent an informative day in a rural Wisconsin school in 1989 and then hung out with some staff for the weekend - quite enough to allow me to decide I'd prefer to teach over here but then I expect she'd feel the same way about UK schools - it's what you're familiar with that counts.

She made time every evening to read before going to sleep. It helped her calm down from all the studying.

I fear for her being a teacher. Not because of the workloads or students. It's because the shooters go for the teacher first.

I wasn't going to mention that. It did strike me very markedly that the single desk set ups and the highly competitive and critical attitude between students in the school I visited was isolating for young people and could easily lead to disaffection and brooding over revenge (the armed security guard's presence even then suggested it might be expected) - I've always thought that personal isolation and unhappiness is what eventually triggers those who go over the edge and resort to mass violence in schools, now well-fuelled by the ease of finding encouragement online without anyone knowing.

I never felt particularly vulnerable here until the last few years when society in general has had people heading straight to stabbing rather than having any escalatory process which could be defused. Now I'm glad it's not something I or my family have to worry about - at work at least.
