Classic security on the road

I've usually chucked a cheap chain around my bikes but I wondered what others do with 1950s classics that have zero security when parked overnight away from home. Perhaps not in the street but maybe accessible from it.

Obviously the number of people that know how to start a 50s single is limited but there's always luck and anyway wheeling it away and then ditching it would also be annoying.

So, security measures... any suggestions?

I don't lock up my bike on a trip, but then again I tend not to go places where they might get stolen. No recreational ride of mine includes cities, because I hate 'em.

My stops on a multi-day olde bike trip tend to be B&Bs, campgrounds, or friends houses. When I stop to eat, it's generally a small town where I can stop by a place where I can look out of a window and keep an eye on the bike.

Fifty three years and nothing stolen yet....

I am with you Lannis. I will not leave it where I cannot see it, not even outside my local.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

We used a small piece of cigarette paper (or any paper) between the magneto points.

I have one of those very hard chains and a hardened MOD approved security lock I "borrowed" from work when the site I used to work at closed down.

At the end of the day is some scroates decide to take your bike they will, all you can do is make it harder for them.

Who needs a signature anyway......

D locks that are difficult to cut with an angle grinder are well worth the cost if you value your bike but they are expensive.
Litelok & Hiplok D locks have been proved the best.
A simple bike cover is also a great deterrent (thieves won't waste their time if they can't readily see what they're stealing).
My favourite security device is to park mine next to something easier to steal.
Whatever lock you chose is best if it locks/chains your bike to solid immoveable infrastructure

Slightly OT. When I last moved house one of the bikes in the garage had a then top of the range ABU D lock on it - which I'd lost the keys to. Knew builder son had an angle grinder. Plugged it in, about 2 minutes later he was back at the house.

And of course you can get cordless angle grinders these days, so nothing is safe.

Correct. Its really just a matter of how long you can delay the scroats.

A simple bike cover is also a great deterrent

Not sure how much of an actual deterrent a cover is, but I have been using one for a few years now on the basis that it couldn't really do any harm & would keep the bike dry if it rained overnight.

I have a couple of Aldi / Lidl motorcycle covers that seemed to come on sale regularly a few years ago, though not so often recently. These pack up to around the size of a soft drink can, so are not too difficult to find a corner for.

I use an Abus D lcok on the drum braked MZ, a chunky Oxford disc lock on the disc braked bikes & park opposite the main Reception entrance at the Premier Inns I have stayed at, in direct view of the CCTV cameras & usually under lighting.
