20p in Salisbury, I have no objection to even 40p as long as the money goes to pay an attendant and make sure the facilities are spot less.
Seen to many manky public lavs.

Same in France, usually some old biddy who will compliment you with vigour if you don't leave a pourboire.

Consider yourself lucky you still have them at all. A lot of local councils close the public toilets completely, and in some instances sell them off for redevelopment so can't be reopened if there was ever a change of policy.

While traveling in the USA, rest stops can be convenience stores that sell food, fast food places, and grocery stores, all required to have restrooms.

Wherever I stop, if the facilities are clean, I always leave a tip "for whoever cleaned the restroom last" at the front counter. $2 to $5, depending what change I have and how clean it was.

Sometimes they decline it. Usually if the owner is at the counter, they decline it with thanks, otherwise I think they appreciate an actual token to go with the "good job".

The old lady at the French 'toilette' would get the same if it were clean, or none if it were not. If she complained, I can tell fortunes as well as she can ....!

Council owned and run public toilets? Really? I think they were all closed here in Leicester and then sold off and redeveloped. Anyway 40p is hardly the end of he world as it is only about the cost of around 1.6% of a pint of beer. I saw a report on the Beeb Internet news last week about s one young person claiming that Starbucks were now insisting that there toilets were for customers only, so it meant paying about £4.50 for a coffee. Of course in most towns/cities there are shopping malls and they usually have public toilet areas with no charge.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

It's along way for me Togo to a shopping centre for a pee this is South East Devon so even my village public toilet will be charged .. don't compare forty P to a pint of beer I don't drink alcohol I stopped when it was 50p a wast of money cheaper to fill the car with petrol.

Why should I not make the comparison against a pint of beer? it is, in case you are not aware, a product consumed by vast numbers of the population and is IMHO a reasonable comparison. On the other hand it is 8.8% of the cost of a Starbucks coffee, or about 6% of the price of a gallon of petrol, about the cost of 1.2 fluid ounces of petrol.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

Starbucks on our West Coast had a huge problem a few years ago. They, of course, had to be tolerant and inclusive and non-judgmental, so they had a policy that anyone could use their toilets.

So street bums started camping in the Starbucks, the staff could hardly keep up with the trash, dirt, used needles in the loos; a hobo could have a warm place to stay by spending $4 on a black coffee then sleeping all day at a table.

It took lawsuits and a lot of bad press to reverse that policy ....

Alternatively, at least in the countryside,ther eare hedges and trees.

But several LHW's (left hand wipes) operate a stop and go policy.Seen it action. squatting on a brick in a local stream, but he did a good job carwashing.

People interested in fixing such things estimate that of 1.2 billion people on the Indian subcontinent, about 500,000,000 of them poop on the ground; not in an outhouse or dug latrine, but on the top of the ground.

You guys should have learned how to grow tea yourselves. It's all coming home to roost ....!

A civilised colony would have realised that the way to solve their problem would have been to use all that tea for a good brew up and a bacon sarny over a grown up chat. Of course you lot down under stole the tea in UK so we sent you down there, but at least you know how to brew.

One thing I learned during my trips to the UK and camping in pub gardens was the basics of brewing a good cup of tea.

1) No "Lipton's", which is made of sweepings and stems.

2) An extra spoonful for the pot.

3) Water has to be hissing, bubbling hot when it hits the tea in the warmed-up pot.

4) If you use milk, the brew has to be the color of Thames river water.

A Brit would spit out what passes for tea here...

Here, a big splash of taxpayers' money was spent on refitting the toilets with seam welded s/s. Very flash.
Unfortunately, they didn't include the extra cost of a bulk drain in the floor to facilitate hosing down for cleaning.
H&S declared them unsafe, when the cleaner (part-time) was made redundant, so they've been padlocked ever since.
