I'm in shock

Some clown manage to wipe out my drivers door mirror on my van. Just been quoted £735 for a new one. It has sensors built in it that give outside temp plus give info to self clean particle filter. Bloody hell it's more than I payed for one of my previous vans !!!!

No used ones kicking around on E Bay.

It is no wonder a lot of vehicles get written off with very little damage.

Nek I wish it was that easy. My van got stuck in limp mode coming back from Rochester. Not good driving on motorways at 50 flat out. Unfortunately what caused this was the pattern mirror I had fitted cocked up the particle filter. I have to use the correct mirror or I will keep getting the same problem. All the joys of modern electronics in todays vehicles.

It is very common that any new electronic part will have to be accepted by the vehicle ECU and that usually means a dealer fit.
Repairing the boys Merc with used parts, the air bags are not accepted so had to fit the ECU from the car the replacement airbags came from.
Many new cars are being scrapped due to ECU faults and that unit can cost a lot of money.
BMW fit them on the rear floor in some cars and if the car enters deep water, it is killed.

There isn't, but there is an ambient air temperature sensor used by the engine management system. Pattern mirrors are cheaper but don't have this sensor and it causes engine management errors leading to clogged DPFs.

There are several iterations of Sevel van mirrors at varying prices - Jerry seems to be unlucky that his is amongst the most expensive. At a guess it is electrically adjustable, heated, has a radio ariel in-built as well as the temperature sensor.

Sevel parts are pricey - my Ducato MH was damaged by another driver's actions, resulting in a damaged front wheel as well as the mirror housing. Less costly mirror than Jerry's, but still over £1k + Vat for a bare alloy wheel & the mirror. There is a reason why you will see many MHs having white or yellow "mirror protectors" stuck over the outer mirror shell !

what you need is a nice Ford Thames 400e,was good enough for the 59 club back when.
just think, no road tax,no Mot, no khan tax,cheap insurance.
I had a couple wish I never got rid, and with the knobbly bits removed I Could get 3 bikes in the back and still have room to kip in the middle. 4 times to Spain like that. Great days.

My second race van was a Thames. We all had them in the good old racing days. All very good until you tried to change gear too quickly and the link rods would jam. Spent many a journey laying under mine in the rain with a large long screwdriver to unlock them. Happy Daze.

Talking old vans, I can remember us all piling into a Bedford CA Dormobile - sliding doors / column change and heading down to Cornwall on Hol many many years ago.

Remember being in traffic in the sun and Dad would open the drivers door to let some air in only for it to slam shut when you had to stop.

And how do you communicate your "hand measured" temperture to the engine ECU so that it can correctly calculate the required amount of fuel to inject ?

no vehicle I have ever owned has had an ECU nor will ever have,what ever ECU is.
fuel consumption is regulated by my right foot.

Dont know how badly smashed it was but you can get replacement reflector mirrors that will not repair the sesnors of course

All the ruddy Gizmos on the Skoda the mirrors don't fold. Can't believe that there are so many options on opening the doors a other thing that P...ses me off is the glove box it's soo deep I can't reach the bottom and I've got long arms???

Fingers crossed that I may have avoided buying an very expensive mirror. Asked Peugeot if they sold the sensor separate which turns out they do. So I have just spent £77 on one one and stripped and rebuilt my mirror so long test run tomorrow to see if all resets itself and works and maybe even prove to nek I can.

I'm afraid that the buyers love all that gadgetry. I hear owners of new cars gushing about their big monitors, self-steering and braking, 15 air bags, etc.

People get spoiled and expect their cars to give them a foot rub and the world news while they drove. I like my 1990 Festiva and my 1969 MG; so simple.
