Machinery is out to get me...

Now I have the Ajay sorted (for now, to some extent, mostly, possibly, perhaps, maybe and any other caveat you can think of!) after 4 months of fiddling I thought I could relax. And mow the lawn.

But no. The mower is having none of it. Starts fine, runs, revs up as it should, runs for fifteen seconds then dies back to barely a tickover. After a few seconds it revs up again and so the cycle goes on with the occasional stall.

It's had ethanol carp in all winter so obviously a blocked carb - presumably fuel flow restricted given the symptoms.

So, I dismantle the carb numerous times, remove fuel filter, substitute proper petrol pipe for the soft rubbish that I spot can stick to itself slowing fuel delivery. All jets out, all passageways cleaned and blasted with the compressor. A whole morning of frustration as the symptoms alter slightly but never go away.

So, as it's so obviously a fuel problem I take the plug out again and rather than just clean it as I have already done I close the gap a bit. Problem solved.

Torch spark plugs. I guess they must be one step up from a Bic lighter that has no fuel. NGK on the way. Obviously when it arrives I shall discover that the problem is the magneto/governor or whatever lives in the depths of the engine but a proper plug is a start

This last week I have felt victimised by the things in the garage. I won in the end but I'm not sure they aren't plotting out there each night whilst I'm innocently sleeping.

My mower drives me nuts same thing wouldn't start my son Graham drained it new fuel then still no life checked plug cleaned and heated it up put in still nothing so tipped mower on its side so fuel peed out of the float bowl pulled the starter and it fired up so managed a cut on the lawn but needs another ..

Problem is that carbs on modern mowers etc dont have a tickler so you cant flood them other than as you say Dave by turning the thing on its side. I have one of those Chinese made 2 stroke generators (based on an early Yamaha one) On starting from cold even with choke on it wont start, but a wiff of Easystart in air in take and its away. Starts every time after that

A Ryobi ONE mower solves all the problems and will work every time. In my case though, i just took up the grass and planted concrete slabs

Mine is a German Sidvalve fourstroke electric start and pull start even has a cup holder and ignition key .but still a bugger to start

Just watch out owning a grass mower, anything happens in the neighbourhood and it will grass you up

Just doing the 500-hour service on my Cub Cadet. Change oil and filter, change hydraulic drive oil, take off and sharpen blades, grease all the pivot points. 33 horsepower Kawasaki V-twin OHV engine, 61 inch cut. We cut about 8 acres so it gets some use...

My mower has a Briggs and Stratton mootor.

Gets the fule treatment over the winter months, and I usually start it a couple of times as well.

Usually no probs when first start of spring comes.

Could be the plug, I had one fail over the winter months, it would spark but engine would not run.

Good luck solving it.

Who needs a signature anyway......

Have you considered using Aspen alkylate fuel ?

It ain't cheap, but is not supposed to go off. Former work switched over to using the 2T version in chains saws, stone cutters and brush cutters that were always a pain to get going after a period of no use on traditional petrol premix, but were largely problem free on Aspen. As you probably won't use a great deal of it in the mower it may be worth the extra cost if it takes the hassle out of getting it going when you want it.
