A new riding hazard?

Has there been a change to the highway code?

Over the last couple of weeks I have come accross several instances of drivers stopping abruptly / unexpectedly to let traffic out from the left.

I get why you might do it if the traffic flow is heavy / slow moving but if traffic is light why would you ?

One of these almost caught me out as the driver stopped so abruptly and no I was not driving right up his arse.

Who needs a signature anyway......

That happened to my son was driving a customers car in the outside lane overtaking and car he was overtaking stopped to let a car out from the left
As you can guess he clobbered the exiting car
Fortunately a Police car saw it .. both drivers were done for it..

Its because twat drivers think they are being courteous and saintly drivers by stopping to let someone in.

Best of mine was a prick who stopped to let someone in on the elevated section of M4.

Mmmm ... Since moving to the Highlands nearly eleven years ago, <u>the</u> outstanding difference is Highland inhabitants are <u>generally</u> more courteous than Down South, not <u>just</u> when driving. I've checked this randomly several times a year.

Who'd have thought it - old farts whingeing about one human being courteous to another?

I often let people out but not if i have a lot of cars close behind. Works alright in this area.

You have missed the point of my posting, I dont have any issue with drivers being courteous, it is when they try to be courteous but in doing cause other drivers problems, and as Geoff has already pointed out causes an accident.

Feel free to interpret my posting any way you wish.

You're right; it's always best to do what the law allows. Here, it's ignorant people, thinking they're being "nice", stopping in a roundabout to let someone in from outside. No one is expecting that and it causes crashes.

It's fine to "let people in" to a traffic queue if traffic is already stopped, but hitting the brakes unexpectedly is a costly courtesy....

Unless your first post did not explain clearly, before the vehicle(s) emerged "from the left", you did not have any idea why the drivers were stopping; on each occasion it could have been for something in front of that vehicle that you couldn't see. Absent a clearer explanation, afaict you're moaning because you've been caught out more than once by drivers stopping, but it isn't your fault, you're trying to justify your lack of anticipation with the word "abruptly" and said drivers shouldn't have stopped you just to let other vehicles out of a minor road at a junction?

You do, the only "problem" I see detailed in your posts is your lack of anticipation of other drivers' potential actions in a given situation.

I suspect you mean TUD's post:-

... but you have misinterpreted:-

. the accident wasn't caused by the driver "stopped to let a car out from the left";

. it was caused by the driver of the car exiting the minor road, entering a multi-lane major road, failing to check all lanes of the major road were clear before entering.

If I'm still missing the point of your posts, as I say, please explain what I'm missing?

It is not unreasonable for following drivers to assume that a driver who has priority would excercise it and not arbitrarily stop to let a driver who does not have priority exit a junction.

"Courtesy" has nothing to do with it - priorities are established, are usually clearly indicated and should be adhered to - messing about with priorities causes accidents.

Again that was one of my points Nigel.

Never have had an issue with letting a vehicle out from the left if the traffic you are in is very slow moving / stop / start, but to do it when traffic is flowing freely effectivley messing with priorities is a no no and accident causer.

Stopping on the busy M4 and the two lane bit at that,to let another vehicle in is asking for trouble.
anyone remember the original rules on motorways about merging traffic? As I recall it was matching your speed to merge and if not possible Stop.

That does not mean belting out the slip road at 80mpd and then sloping to 50.

as for stopping halfway round a roundabout to let someone in..........

Furriners now resident here? Plenty of Europe had/still has, priority from the right. OTOH, here in Suffolk, I regularly come across people who stop when something comes the other way...

down yere in west country look, we got some as do indicate when they move out to overtake a beer can in the kerb, then there is those that brake at every corner, and them as 'ave German cars that never indicates at all.
Drives I up bloody wall it do.
