Well, many of us will now get the heating allowance for the Winter. I certainly will and i am spending it heating myself up in a warm Country again next january.
I like free money and i feel like i am just getting one months income tax back.
I notice if one of a pair of pensioners does earn over 35k and the other earns less, the lesser paid one gets half of the 300 pounds

Extra 9 million will get it now. At least the more wealthy are excluded. I am waiting to see if savings exclude it but so far, it appears that they pay out based on your tax returns and tax codes. I pay quite a bit of tax on my pensions although my wife does not as only on state pension.
Something for nothing is great. My own heating bill is very low as my insulation is excellent for an old house.
I did fit a very good heating boiler 35 years ago and it works well and i have spent £40 on repairs in that time. Modern combis cost a fortune in repairs and often worn out at 10 years. I used to repair Vaillant makes and they did very well in large rented properties. Faults were flue fans and one of the control boards. That make generally lasted 15 years but they were always repairable.

So that's 50% for us. Seems illogical. She can now heat half the house.
Just doing my tax return and note that my Premium bonds gave 4.8% tax free. Mind you, Rachel from accounts will have her eye on them soon no doubt.

My Bonds have done well David. About 2500 last year and this year seems to be going about the same. Just need that big win to come in now.

I have a Vaillant. It's utter carp. Years ago a floor mounted Ideal Mexico lasted 30yrs before the core starting dripping.

When Vaillant came about in the 90s, they were excellent but if buying one now, you need a Bosch /Worcester.
Knowing about the cost of combi repairs, i keep the boiler i fitted back in the 1980s in my house. cast iron heat exchanger, no electronics, just a thermocouple and a thermostat. Works very well in a house with quite a large floor area and on 3 floors.
Slow to heat a cylinder of water is the downside but i can boost that with an immersion heater that just heats the upper section in 15 minutes for a shower.
The electronic boards in most combis will cost over 150 pounds and they do fail quite a lot on the early models

Good market in Devizes, its where I go for fruit and veg,good cheese stalls as well. Nobody admires my scooter though.

I am but sadly I can't afford to run a proper bike any more, wish I could. When I look at the tyres on modern bikes, blimey! I used to but cars frot he price of those. Insurance is also crippling; I used to run Peugeot 205's, first thing asked when I went for a quote..."is it a GTI? [I wish ] has it got alloy wheels? is it modified? So I got rid. I have to exist on state pension and a bit of ducking and diving. We not all Geoff the Bonnie here. But at least its not a lambretta or vespa just an old mans bike.

Bikes cost a lot of money and more than a same age car. One of the best low cost to run cars is a Toyota Aygo. Brother bought one 10 years ago and nothing gone wrong at all.

In one thread you dudes are bemoaning crushing taxes on everything, and in the next you are talking about how much you like "free money".

They take £100 from you, strip off £60 to pay the tax collectors and huge bureaucracy, give £20 to the armies invading over the Channel, then dole out £20 to you for a Heating Allowance -

... and that's somehow "free money"?
