RIP M&P

the well known shop faced and mail order motorcycle and parts dealer based Swansea way has now closed

one of the local (non biking) rags stated

"According to Swansea Bay News, around 50 staff were informed they were to be made redundant on September 15 after being acquired by an investor group earlier in the year.

They were subsequently let go earlier this week on September 24."

I am also reading unconfirmed reports that the "name" is reopening after xmas at a new location 100% mail order

There must have been a lot of staff for 50 to be fired and still have enough staff to manage mail orders.
The way things are going, all this work will be done by robots, while humans will sit around drinking tea.

I have bought a tyre recently from M and P. They also sold gasket sets at a good price. I have always used ebay for buying.

They don't need many staff at all. There are mailorder outsourcing outfits around who will do the entire thing for you.

Think I have probably ordered stuff from them in the past, but a very long time ago.

If they do carry on trading, i would certainly buy parts again. Generally, the parts are cheaper than most other suppliers. Last buy was a Continental classic attack tyre. Manufacturers date was recent but not fitting it until early next year

as stated above Geoff , "IF" they do reopen it will not be M&P , it will be a a no name investor group , that thinks nothing of staff or loyalty , simply box shifting , using the M&P brand name

Sadly its another reflection of the state of the UK motorcycle trade. I suspect the writing was on the wall before the new investors took over. First tremors were when M&P lost their BMW franchise over a year ago. New investors might actually be saving a part of the business rather than the whole shebang going down the plughole. Never the less sympathy for their employees & customers.

Shame - another one gone.

Used them for many years, as often the best price for "loose" tyres. Used them last in August for a replacement rear tyre for the wife's Scram 411 & a front sprocket for the Interceptor.

I don't know what the story was with Busters - may have been a break-away outfit from ex-M&P staff, but seemd to get absorbed by M & P later (same address), so sort-of competing against themselves ?

If another online company offering the same or similar products under the same name comes along I doubt that the majority of their customers would notice, as I would guess that the mail order side was bigger than the retail bikes / servicing side ? Swansea isn't exactly convenient for the vast majority of the UK to drop in to pick stuff up.

Delivery times might improve then, Lannis.

Last delivery of RE parts from an Indian supplier landed on my doorstep in under a week, at around half the price delivered for a genuine RE part compared to UK "list" price.

The days when iron barrel Bullet parts came from India wrapped in muslin, tied with strimg & sealed with sealing wax do appear to have ended though.

I still have the tin box my first Indian petrol tank came in. Made from Tate and Lyle golden syrup tins, whole sale sizes.

Not used M&P for years. Once ordered & paid for a HD chain, only to get a standard one. Was a working courier at the time, so had to use it, scrap in a month. It snapped outside Nuneaton on a job - was rescued by a BMW rider who took me to a dealer there who sold me a decent one.
Never found them that cheap either.
