Misleading Temporary road signs

Dont know if it just prone to Somerset.

Riding along towards Pilton this afternoon when I came accross a "Road Closed Ahead" sign, being on the bike I pressed on. There will still cars coming the other wey so clearly not closed.

Got to the actual "road closure", there was about 30 feet or so of cones, and a few bits dug up on the side of the road - plenty of room for vehicles in both directions. Not exactly closed.

Plenty of oncoming vehicles turning around when they saw the unecessary sign for no need at all.

There seem to be quite a few "Road Closed" signs dotted about, more often than not the road you are on is not closed, it is often a side road, but why put out signs that make it look like the road you are on is closed?

A few months ago I went to an Uncles cremation - yep "road closed" signs on the way to the Crem, a lot of people took some very long detours for no reason.

I knew the road was unlikely closed as I had ridden along it the day before - reaon for "closure" one single drain cover being repaired.

No real obstruction to traffic.

FFS the Council ought to be ashamed of themselves putting that sign up and making people take huge detours to get to the Crem.

Just cant trust any of these temporary signs any more.

Suspect it may be down to elf and safety.

Who needs a signature anyway......

Same here in Norfolk , road closed and diversion signs everywhere, most of which amount to nothing.

There was a long discussion about this in the general chat page on a gun site (no pun intended

) I belong to.
It is indeed nationwide, comes down to a mixture of economics & efficiency (or not). This is what I understood...
OK, loads of people need to dig up roads. Gas, 'leccy, water, BT, & of course actual road repairs. They don't all supply their own signs, that's often subcontracted. Depending on area, could be to the Council or private contractors.
If works going to be going on for a few days, they are not going to be out at the beginning & end of every working day all over the County/area to place & remove signs.
I live in a village about four miles from the outskirts of the nearest town, have done for c. 20 years. The back lane is 'shut' about once a month. I've only once been turned back once when I ignored the signs.

Same here in Cambridgeshire signs are put up by an agency and are often left up after road is opened. It seems that every bit of roadworks has road closed signs. I think there is more to this, maybe a goverment direction to councils to get cars off the road.

Every way in and out of Exmouth has road works and traffic lights right now. Some controlling 4 roads so a long delay. I know a route through some housing estates to get around this. Bit of a nuisance on the bike sitting for 10 minutes at some of them.

Up here in Suffolk, I have seen 'Road Closed Ahead' signs 20 miles before the actual closure. The key word is 'Ahead'. The road isn't closed until it says 'Road Closed'. Even then you can sometimes get by, though you are technically being naughty.
