Only just found out I'm a racist

As a very young kid I had a gollywog enamel badge that I sent off for from the marmalade company. Funny old world innit.

Sadly I suspect that humour was far too subtle for a large part of their audience.

Sadly, you’re right. The Garnett character became like a popular role model and the production team, including writers, bore that in mind as they wrote more and more outrageous racist dialogue into the script.

The first person "of colour" that I met worked at the same place as Dad did.

Really nice bloke, he and Dad used to mutually take the piss out of each other about race, and both could see the funny side, how times have changed.

Probably be reported as an "offence" these days even if both parties were just joking / having a laugh at each other - remember that - having a laugh, it was humour.........

Who needs a signature anyway......

The first motor yacht I joined in Malta had one black crew who was known as Blondie. We used to tease him something rotten but if we went out as a gang and he got racially abused in the bars we all used to unite and defend him.

I’ve always called them Golly or Gollies as the last bit was sure to offend. I have dozens of them including several special issues such as the “Gold” and the “Silver” ones. There used to be thousands on EBay until some gentleman of colour wrote to the Daily Mail. They published an article based on his letter without presumably any research at all resulting in an immediate total ban on EBay. Some do creep in there from time to time but nowhere near what they did, all because of that one letter.

Anyone remember "sing something simple" used to be on the radio on Sunday evening I think, used to listen to it with Mum and Dad sometimes.

Believe it was songs done by the Mike Adams singers which were "Miinstrels", really find it hard to understand why the "Black and White" Minstrels are now some kiind of racist thing, sorry just dont get it, and probablhy never will.

Who needs a signature anyway......

I remember Sing Something Simple on R2, (Gawd, I remember when it was the Light Programme),
from Wiki;
'Sing Something Simple was a half-hour radio programme, which featured Cliff Adams and The Cliff Adams Singers, with Jack Emblow on accordion. The programme, which featured arrangements of popular easy-listening songs, ran for 42 years from 1959 until 2001' No relation to the B&W Minstrels Show.

Strangely, I always thought that the Sunday night radio show (always on when our mum did the ironing) was a B&W Minstrel show too.
(Quite why they would do their costumes etc to sing on the radio was never fully thought through...)
Maybe it was the style of songs or whatever.

When my sister was very young, 1960s, wanted a jollywog [intentional misspelling] for christmas, I scoured London toy shops including Hamleys with no result until I found one at last, In Bon Marche dept store, where? middle of Brixton.
I still have a few of those jam labels.

The reason they put Archie on the radio was Peter Brought was the worst ventriloquist there ever was. When Archie went on television they made a mechanical model of him, presumably so Peter could talk off camera.

Wikipedia says about the Black and White Minstrels: “During the nine years that the show was broadcast in black and white, the blackface makeup was actually red, as black did not register as well.”

I remember they sang some numbers without blacking up, using the name The George Mitchell Minstrels.

My first reading book at Primary school was, Little black Sambo. There was a series of the book which is now banned and removed from all libraries. I bought one on ebay to find what was wrong with it and it was about Sambos Mother who had been enslaved and a servant. When at school, we saw nothing wrong with it. I then sold it again on ebay and the book was about 10 pounds at the time

there is a marked gravestone at middleton ? nr lancaster (sunderland point), it is to the $iger slave boy , the story goes , he was left when the $lave ship sailed and ended up living with the locals till he died
I remember stopping at it , when with my mother and father , probably 60 yrs ago

It seems to have been exsponged from records and history now
