Jerry’s London

I commute down the Edgware Road fairly regularly and, bearing in mind that I have worked abroad most of my life, I remembered today when it was THE street in London for electronic gadgets and equipment. No longer. Middle Eastern from one end to the other. When did that happen?

It is a strange land now David. All local Post offices and stores in Exmouth are becoming Premier outlets and run by Indian families. They are doing a great job though and run with just family staff.
Possibly the British born people who would have taken on Post offices are afraid after the scandal.
One did get jailed in Exmouth for theft of 35,000 pounds but maybe she was not a thief.
The takeover in Town is the Turkish barber gang with 6 seats to each store. One man sits inside with his phone and 2 sit outside just up the road with phones. The one inside does cut hair a few times a week. Fantastic money spent on the shops and the empty nail bars seem to do very well.
In the last 5 years, we have a lot of supercars in town but nice to see the Ferrari's and Lambos plus a few Audi V10s but most visits to the shops are by a black Mercedes coming in every few days with some bags. The raided cigarette shop has re-opened supposedly selling cups of tea. Still has his guard sat across the road in a picnic chair.

I try and avoid cities all together these days, for some reason I just dont like crowded places anymore.

Dont really like my local high street anymore, too many people, too much pushing / shoving / no apologies.

Who needs a signature anyway......

Over 00 arrests of drug traffickers in Devon and Cornwall this week. Seems they are now using the trains to deliver from the North.
Maybe soon, they will stop the barber shop laundering of the cash.

I wouldn’t hold your breath, Geoff. We have four in my small town, including an eight or nine seater which can’t possibly make economic sense.
P.S. the Mail yesterday posted a video of a burglary in my street. On listening to it my Romanian taxi driver noted they were Polish. Incidentally he is leaving this country, after working hard for many years to pay to build his house, as he is fed up with the way it is going. Ironic eh?

The Inland revenue investigated the local barber trading since the 1950s and passed down to his siblings. They queried his income of 500 pounds a week for a 1 chair barber. he explained that 10 cuts a day at 10 pound was normal but sometimes he had less cuts. When he asked about the Turkish barber trading opposite, they had 500,000 pound a year income so the Exmouth barber invited HMRC to watch the shop from his own shop as it had very few customers and just 1 cutter.
The local man was being investigated because HMRC thought 500,000 pounds would have been the target for a barber shop. Notably, most of the shops have at least 4 chairs to give the idea that they are cutting a lot of hair in this Town of bald old men

The house i bought in West Ealing for £6 grand when first married is now for sale at over a million
Three bedroom terrace on a main road..mindyou it is over 50 years ago

Then bought this house on Dartmoor what was I thinking ten bedrooms two lounges two toilets and one bathroom heating storage heater until I had central heating on two floors and storage on top floor I had my clockworkshop on top floor two rooms the rest taken over by a model railway set up ...Maz did B&B also the milk round and worked on chicken farm ..Then sold and bought our bungalow in Woodbury now looking at moving again ..Mad House

At least that barber is an honest man, declaring his income from illegal drugs dealings and paying his taxes.

I used to work in Edgware Road (291?) Post Office occasionally in the 1960’s. I recently went back to my old haunts where I used to live in Hornsey N8 and found difficulty in recognising any of the shop signs. The old place just wasn’t in any way the same, and like Dave the house I could have bought in 1965 for circa £17,000 last sold for over £1,000,000 !!

Seems crazy these terraced houses at over 1 million pounds although my semi detached is now around the 400,000 mark but i can just about see the sea from upstairs. Someone built a house in my way.

Amazing these house prices. We bought our current house in Biggleswade in 1992 for circa £84,000 and it is now valued around £480,000. This change matters not to me as I intend to be carried out of it having no intention , currently, of realising the value and moving on. But to the Council it means I must be wealthy and they increase my Council tax each year accordingly without any consideration to my means of paying.

Two of the houses on my plot one has sold but not taken by the new buyers yet they want it tartedup then found the owner built the extention too neartoan Oak tree.. the other house just on the market 400 .000 as it was built nice garage as well
Mine is a three bed bungalow hoping to selling a year or so have lots of land that you could build two houses on I will miss my garage

I was lucky when they banded the houses for council tax. A van drove along the road and declared them all to be 2 bedroom but all were 3 bedroom and i have a 4th room in the roof. Rated band B but being classed as disabled in 1980, i get a drop to band A for an adapted house. Its a good saving and just required a visual inspection from the local council.
It stays on band B until i no longer live in the house.
I did all the alterations over the last 40 years as needed. Nice level entrances, straight staircase, rails for all stairs and steps, low shower tray, lever taps, automatic lighting on the stairs and the list goes on. Next job will be a stair lift but i use the stairs as my excercise so it will come later.
I did pay for all this equipment although my neighbour got it all for free as he declared no savings despite having 2 cars and nice holidays, however, if you get this free alteration by the local authority and social care, it is very low quality and hand rails are thin, stair rails are just a round thin timber and his handrails keep falling off. He bought a house with 4 steps to the front door so a big mistake as he will be unable to use them one day and no rear access.
This area seems to be getting wealthier lately as house prices do not allow young people to borrow 400,000 pounds
