Plenty of bikes for sale in 1946

When the second world war ended in 1945 the ministry would sell off all the unwanted military bikes but I'm sure they were well abused.

civilian plates?

yes bikes that were probably being handed back to therer oowners , after being "borrowed" by the army for a few years

Unlikely, I would say, as the bikes in the foreground are the same model, and I can't imagine the WD grouping the bikes by make/model at disposal sales after six years use. Also, the original owners were financially compensated at the time, but they didn't get their bikes back (that's if there was anything to give back after six years of war).

My first bike was an XWD G3 Matchless, very reliable.
In the late sixties I bought an XWD B 40 BSA from a military surplus store cost £80 and had done under 100 miles. At the time you could not get to see the bike you ordered until the day of collection.

Pile them high and sell them cheap. Can you imagine the time wasted with tyre-kicking air-stealers if they were allowed to see what they were buying beforehand?
