If you kept out of the way of the “teddy boy” gangs it was. Some of them could be pure nutters as I found out once just for, supposedly, looking at two of them walking down the road.

Never saw any Teds around where I grew up - mind you I rarely saw anyone as it was a tiny little village upon the Mendips called Binegar, which was part of Gurney Slade which was apparently the inspiration for Anthony Newley's "Strange world of Gurney Slade".

I was once told he was passing through Gurney Slade - saw the signpost, and the rest is history.

Most of the “Teds” were ok it was, probably as today, the ones that gathered in groups. The ones I apparently upset were one of the latter, unpleasant people.

I got married in a drape suit

arrived at church on pillion of my mates chopper.
My Mum said I looked like an old time gunslinger, but it was a sharp drape. very smart.
wore it many times to the Black Raven Teds pub in Bishopgate London, never had any grief, well, once from some birds Mum.

Don’t get me wrong I didn’t have a problem with drapes, in fact I had one. Not the full length or the fancy colours with velvet finish but about 3/4 and charcoal grey with one piece back accompanied with the crepe suede shoes. My Mother was a pretty relaxed woman but she was adamant that if I came home with the full business she would personally march me back to the shop and get it altered. I was under no allusion that would happen so I compromised and saved my blushes should the lads find out. Coward, moi?

mine was a tailor made by a tailor in Windsor dark blue with all the trimmings, waistcoat, frilly shirt front. My mother in law to be said..." you are never going to marry my daughter in that suit" sadly she lied, it didn't last long anyway. My mum was just glad to see me in a suit other than my normal grubby bike gear.
Not a proper drape with out a one piece back, sold mine via an antique place, it went to Japan. Sad, but I could not fit into it at that stage.
