Lousey day

Yesterday called in the local drain cleaner
So off with the manhole cover and sent a camera down the pipe finding the pipe had collapsed this is under the conservatory which is attached to the kitchen
So it means removal of the conservatory floor to replace the broken pipe..
So going to cost quite a lot of pennies and fortunately they will start on Monday comming
Meanwhile washing up water thrown on the garden
Also a surveyor will be checking for subsidence

Insurance will pay Dave. I would expect it might be pitch fibre pipe which often collapses. That was used in the 1950s and 60s.
That can be a problem with random companies building conservatories over drains.
One was built in my road and the manhole is inside the new building and covered over with a wooden floor. That drain cannot even be inspected or rodded now. The so called builder sealed the lid down with silicone bath seal so no smell came out.

Not quite the same but water related.

Our last water bill was for £800 it is normally around £160.

Waterboard surveyor came out and used his listening rod, he thinks it is a leak near the meter rather than the pipe to the house, they are coming out to investigate further and hopefully fix on the 5th May.

Meantime water bill is suspended if the leak is their fault I just pay our usual average, if leak is in the pipe in our property - dont ask

Who needs a signature anyway......

Our pipe is concrete or somthing like that the conservatory was built after the bungalow was built as was the large double bedroom the whole bungalow is built on on the pebble bed and soil.over the top as are all dwellings here one of my neighbours house was built in the 1700s no.probs there ..

Don’t wish to be a killjoy Andy but if that leak is before the meter I can’t see how the meter would be recording the useage. If I was you I would be giving them a bit of grief on the phone about the delay in investigating.

Always best to have the meter above ground in a cupboad or in house.That way you would notice a leak. as 6TDen says if meter has registerd that usage then leak is on your side.

I said near the meter, should have included on the outlet side but before it crosses our boundary.

If the leak is on the outlet side and before the pipe crosses our boundary it is their responsibility, as soon as the pipe crosses our boundary the onus is on us to pay to get it fixed.

So fingers crossed it will be before the pipe crosses our boundary.

They cant investigate any sooner due to staff availability.

So assume in the ground in the road or footpath. Might be a good idea to get them to re locate the meter inside your property. The pipe work from it to your house is probably well corroded.

Water suppliers are not bothered losing 100s of thousands of gallons from leaking pipes. There is a small fountain of water in my road and its been leaking for 25 years now despite requests to fix it.
The road has now lifted and bright red soil is being pumped up through the tarmac. There are now many plants surrounding the leak but the new road hump is hitting the bottom of passing cars now.

The iron pipe supplying my water is 99 years old so far. It is set in red clay and not leaked yet. Drains are glazed pipe and run very well. I did cut a tree down 30 years ago as i could see roots heading for the drain. Tree roots are the things that do most damage to drains. Dont plant any in the garden and cut down any you have near drains of foundations. My stupid teacher Neighbour has planted a tree and his dividing wall collapsed as the tree grew and sucked all the water from under the wall.

Err you've got it wrong its a waste drain pipe from the kitchen its OK from the bathrooms
The break is just beyond the sump for drainage
