K&N Filters

The H2 has one of these fitted - the standard filter is nothing more than a foam rubber sheet about 1/2" thick wrapped around a metal cage.
Anyway the K&N was in there when I bought it, so as part of re commissioning I cleaned and re oiled it.
Since putting the bike back on he road it has suffered from "richness" so had to back the carb needles off as well as the airscrews making everything lean to compensate.
Doing this is surprising as everything is standard except for the K&N, which are supposed to flow a lot better than the standard filter.
Bottom line is that it looks like I over oiled the filter after I cleaned it, that would explain why I have had to lean everything off, and the fact that it will start with no choke.
Took the air box apart last night and there was much more oil than I would expect to see in there, also some oil around the base of the filter element.
Gave the filter a good washout / clean with proper K&N cleaner which also dissolves the oil, after drying over night I re oiled it this morning.
This time instead of squeezing oil out of the bottle I let it run out under it's own weight.
Gave the oil an hour or so to "wick" into the filter material and now the element looks nice and reddish / pink and there is no excess oil that I can see.
All back together now, carb settings put back to standard.
Not had a chance to try it yet as the weather is not favourable.
Hopefully this will fix my running issues, never oiled a K&N before so hopefully all down to my inexperience.
Off to find something else to do now on my day off.Who needs a signature anyway......

Didn't know you had to oil K&N filters Andy I have used them in the past and always ran then dry?The oldest rocker in town!

I believe that you can get "dry" K&N filters which don't need oil, but I know the ones for the H2 are oiled versions.
Had one on my last H2, but as I fitted it new I never had to re oil it.
Wish the weather would improve as I am itching to test it Who needs a signature anyway......

K and N are regarded as the best available. My old bikes have no air filters fitted.

Oiling filters on two strokes is not normally required if the filter is directly fitted to the carb.The blow back from a two stroke automatically oils the filter.

True you do get a fair bit of oil spitting back, but it is a long way from the carbs to the filter element on the H2.
K&N filter oil is supposed to be specially formulated to be tacky so it catches the small particles.Who needs a signature anyway......

I installed a K&N filter in a Tiger 955i. Oiled it, etc. When I next had the airbox off for some reason, I was disappointed to have to clean what looked like very fine oily mud from the throttle bodies. That hadn't been there when I installed it. This convinced me that K&N are snake oil to be avoided.To advertise here, please call...
