Reviving

Posted by 6TDen User icon on July 24, 2026, 11:41 am

I’m thinking, only thinking, that I might shortly attempt to revive the 5TA. Would the team think it might be wise to put a few drops of oil in the bores and turn it over on the kick start before attempting a full start up? I emphasise this is a thought at this stage as the 6T has really killed off a lot of my old enthusiasm.

how long has the engine been stood , without being turned over?

Yes, plugs out, oil in bores & kick it over (or to save your legs put in high gear & turn over with back wheel).

Check you have a healthy spark too, again to save your energy.

Make sure the engine hasn't wet sumped.

Also how old is the fuel? Maybe drain the carb & tank and refill with a little fresh fuel. And try a squirt of carb cleaner / EZ Start in to air filter / bell mouth to aid initial start up.

Have a fire extinguisher to hand just in case! I'd avoid a first start inside your garage or shed too. DAMHIKT.

I would put some oil down the bores. That will ensure that you not starting on dry bores and the oil will help with the compression.

The light at the end of the tunnel maybe an oncoming train

Im old fashioned always have put oil down the plug hole and turned engine over during layup.when being used as the instructions say early aircooled engines run on single grade oil not multi grade. My Ariel has lasted over 50 years and twice around the clock and still runs OK but now its moving on

If a Triumph has wet sumped, it’s wise to investigate why.

Will has covered it well but if you have points ignition, it may pay to file between the points where corrosion sets in if left for years

With all your dedication and knowledge, Den, if the it still doesn't start it's because the bike wasn't trying hard enough. Bikes that don't make the effort can be shown the door and I usually find their misery leaves with them.

Den, it might pay to borrow someones stronger leg to kick it over. I can use my starter roller but at over 700 pounds, it is an expensive option.
Good luck but often, these laid up bikes do fire up easily after a few checks and some easy start.

As a start I shall remove the artery today, but may have to have a lay down after that effort. If I do proceed to a successful result I shall report back, hopefully. Thanks to Simon for his useful advice, “ if it don’t go - get rid “. A route I hadn’t considered - yet!

"I usually find their misery leaves with them"

Very true, the KH 400 although eventually becoming compliant had been a source of dis pleasure for a couple of years. Now that I have sold it, I feel much relieved

Same here: after my last AJS 18S, my fourth, took four months of frustration to make perfect I decided against any more Brits, certainly for the foreseeable. Even admiring Tridents and Commandos today at Calne Bike Day didn't change my mind.

When you have an MZ Brits seem hopeless.

I just love the simplicity of an MZ, really tempting to get another ETZ 301, they do crop up but pretty rare.

Best MZ I ever had.

Brit bikes rule Den. I have 3 of them to play with and several thousand spanners to turn. I also have a lot of blue roll paper for wiping oil, a roller starter, lifting ramp, electric motor winch to pull them up the ramp. Gallon of green hand cleaner and broken nails and scratches

Re: Reviving

Posted by Will User icon on July 25, 2026, 10:27 pm, in reply to "Re: Reviving"

Most of my extensive collection of workshop tools & equipment is redundant since I gave up Brit bikes. I also have more time to ride.

I was in Bedfordshire all day yesterday Den, I didn't hear a 6T running, but I did see a flight of nine Spitfires and Hurricanes come over my daughters house twice, what a great sight and sound.

But then again, I don't live in Bedfordshire, so it might have been a bit awkward.

What i like about old British bikes is that i can fiddle with them on a rainy day. I always liked repairing old bikes and cars since i was 13. My new bikes needed very little work and just maintenance. Never used a main dealer for servicing etc. I just ride the new bike away and do any work. That means i have no warranty but have been lucky. The first year is covered but second year is not as it appears it has not been back for service.
Worst problem with the new bikes is engine management light. Both my new bikes have a warning but ride alright so i leave it running
