After playing a long weekend of softball, Maggie's Irish Pub from District 6 took the field on Sunday, July 21st as one of the two teams playing in the championship finals of the ASA of PA Class "E" State Tournament in York, squaring off against Pintos. Pintos claimed the title with a 9-6 victory, ending what was a rather improbable run by Maggie's a single win shy of the ultimate title.
To say that Maggie's did it the hard way would be an understatement. The Pub won it's first game, posting a 12-4 victory over the Bulls, from Wilkes-Barre, PA. But game two didn't go nearly as well, as Maggie's found itself on the wrong end of a 15-4 score against Jimmy O's. The loss relegated Maggie's to the loser's bracket, with a long haul ahead if it was going to make to the finals.
The team got to work on Sunday, beginning play with a win over Gibbons Legal, in the first game of the day, a game played bright and early at 9:00 AM. And Maggie's just kept on winning. 11-4 over the Chasers. 7-2 over Reichards. Topped VFW in a 20-16 barnburner. A revenge win over Jimmy O's by a score of 21-11. Then it was 9-2 over Misfits before a 14-4 victory over Queen City in the finals of the loser's bracket.
Seven games on Sunday, seven straight wins, and all of a sudden Maggie's found itself playing for the championship. The Pub made it eight straight wins in game one, cruising to an 11-2 win and forcing the "if necessary" game, where the Pintos rebounded for the tournament title.
According to Maggie's Irish Pub manager, Pat Gallagher, while Chris Helms pitched all 11 games, it was a total team effort.
"We ran with 13 guys all weekend with everyone pitching in to make the run possible," said Gallagher.
Maggie's Irish Pub will seek to repeat as champions of the Charity Challenge the weekend of August 2-4.
