The Opening Day of the season for the 2014 Millennium Sunday Softball League has been changed to Sunday, April 6th after it was agreed upon at the league meeting last week at Barnaby's of Ridley.
The uncertainty of this weeks weather was the main reason to start the season one week later after I mentioned that Saturday's Millennium/Bats Plus Early Bird Tournament required a good amount of field maintenance after Wednesday's rain and even with the two nice days we had on Thursday and Friday that were breezy and mostly sunny.
With that said, I would like to thank ASA of PA District 6 Deputy Commissioner, Bob Dukes and the volunteers he got together who worked on Manor Field in Essington on both Thursday and Friday.
I would also like to thank the three shifts of volunteers would went to the Camp Upland fields, Jim Buonopane (Big Jim's Gold & Silver) in the morning, Larry McFadden and Mike Miller (Cicconi Auto Body) in the afternnon and in the evening Vinnie Long (Upland A.C.) who all did an extensive amount of work on Friday to get the fields ready for Saturday's tournament.
The fields in the best condition were once again the 69th Street fields in Upper Darby where the township was able to drag the fields on Friday.
To play the Millennium/Bats Plus Early Bird required the use of ten fields, but to play on twenty fields, with what could be the need for similar field maintenance to open the season this Sunday, just wasn't worth taking the chance with the weather forecast we had at the time of the league meeting.
Since Millennium Sunday is now an ASA of PA Class D-2/E league, scheduling conflicts during the league playoffs with teams participating in advance play will be greatly minimized then it has been in the past, allowing the league to start the season on April 6th.
