Daily Times, In The Community: Applegate claims state softball title for Millennium League

The Applegate team of the Millennium Sunday Softball League recently won the Pennsylvania Amateur Softball Association's Class E championship in a tournament held in Drifton.

Applegate became the first team from the Millennium Sunday League to earn a state crown, making good use of its strong defense and a solid lineup of hitters.

Applegate went 6-0 in the tournament, earning the state title with a victory over the Hawks from Gap. The Hawks advanced to the championship round by knocking off District 2 representative Union Station, which had eliminated a pair of teams from the Millennium Sunday League, Stinger's Restaurant and Double Edge Sports Grille.

Stinger's turned in a 5-2 record and placed fourth, and Double Edge went 4-2 to take seventh place.

"All three teams deserve kudos for a great tournament," Millennium League commissioner Joe Organek said. "Their coaches and players deserve applause for representing the district, the county, and specifically the Millennium Sunday League as well as they possibly could and being gracious in both victory and defeat."

Among the members of the Applegate team were Matt Dunn, Eric Perna, Ryan Juisti, Bill Gelsomini, Brian Meagher, Kris Hazlet, Dave Umile, Dennis Dunn, Franco Cardillo, Pat McKeever, Steve DeVito and Jamie Juisti.

The ASA Coed Charity Classic softball tournament will take place Saturday, Aug. 20, at the fields at Furey Road in Upper Chichester.

The tournament will be played under ASA rules and will be limited to eight teams. The entry fee is $200.

Teams on the field must consist of five men and five women, and each team is guaranteed to play three games. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.
