Millennium Fall Ball - Takeaways from opening day
It looked like a promising beginning to the 2019 Millennium Sunday Fall Softball League after a quick turnaround from the Summer to Fall season and a couple of league meetings the league was ready to get underway with perfect weather.
But it didn't quite turn out that way because of the following:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Two umpires that are part of MY personal crew that I assign, one who came from Norristown and another from Phoenixville were treated terribly.
These umpires were berated and had profanity directed towards them.
RESULT: The two teams involved will not have their names mentioned at this time - but are on probation.
The league will not Tolerate this Behavior.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. There were a couple of player ejections ... those names have been recorded with District 6 and will not be posted on the message board - but starting next Sunday any player ejected will have their name placed on the message board along with their infraction.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Here, once again, is the Millennium Sunday Fall refresher on the TIME LIMIT bylaw - since there are still teams in the league who still don't understand it.
EXCEPTION: Please see Rule 8, (a) below.
Note: It is highly recommended that all teams have a copy of the league's rules and regulations with them every week in the event the umpire needs them to make a ruling.
♦
8. TIME LIMIT: A new inning will not begin after one hour from the start of the game. Time begins after the ground rules are taken with the umpire.
Note: The only time a new inning will start after one hour is if a minimal of 5 innings have not been played, which is needed in order for the game to be official and when the game is tied - when it will then be continued using the international tiebreaker rule until a winner is determined.
a) The exception to the use of the TIME LIMIT bylaw is the following:
When a doubleheader is not preceded or followed by another doubleheader there will be no time limit and in all playoff series.
b) Three warm-up pitches to start a game, after which at the beginning of each ½ inning, no more than one warm-up pitch.
c) No infield or outfield warm-up ball after the first inning.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Home teams on the schedule must remember to bring their Bases, Home Plate and Pitcher's Plate.
The visiting team should make it a habit to also bring their equipment to avoid what happened today when neither the home or away team brought their equipment.
Luckily I found a visiting team from another doubleheader who lent their equipment to the home team - avoiding a forfeit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. The misuse of using an Extra Player (EP) has gotten ridiculous and I can't believe that teams still can't get this right.
Extra Player (EP): The 11-man batter rule (EXTRA PLAYER) may be used by any team. Teams may also use 2 EPs and bat 12 players.
The extra player(s) must be made known prior to the start of the game and be listed on the scoring sheet in the regular batting order.
An EP cannot be added once the game has started. If the EP is used, the EP must be used the entire game. The league will follow the USA Softball Extra Player Rule whether a team uses 1 or 2 EPs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. And after you think you heard it all - One team was told when they has sixteen players today that they must bat twelve players in order to use any of their substitutes they had on the bench.
