Every summer, CWF Mid-Atlantic is proud to present the Johnny Weaver Memorial Cup Tournament. Mr. Weaver was an integral part of the tournament until his untimely passing in 2008 and we keep the tradition alive by honoring our dear friend's memory with this annual summer long tournament. This year there was more competition for spots in the tournament than ever as the field was narrowed from the traditional 16 or 12 in year's past to only 8. Qualifying matches were held, invitations were extended to other wrestlers in the Mid-Atlantic and we are now pleased to announce the eight participants in the 9th Annual Weaver Cup Tournament.
Mid-Atlantic Heavyeight Champion RAY KANDRACK: "The Assassin" crushed Kamakazi Kid on July 14th to capture the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship in the main event at "Opportunity Knocks 2012." It was the idea of Johnny Weaver himself back in 2004 when the innaugeral tournament was announced to have the reigning Mid-Atlantic Champion enetered as Weaver wanted the organization's top ace represented in his tournament along with rising stars. Surprisingly in the 8 year tradition of the tournament no reigning Mid-Atlantic Champion has ever won the whole thing and Coach Gemini says his "MVP" Kandrack will be the first, following the tradition of Gemini, Jesse Ortega and Walter Eaton - all former Weaver Cup tournament champions now aligned in the Coach's All Star group.
Hear "The Assassin" Ray Kandrack's first words after capturing the Mid-Atlantic Championship in this exclusive clip posted on our YouTube account at:
CEDRIC ALEXANDER: The hard hitting, insanely athletic Alexander represents our sister promotion out of Charlotte, PWX in this year's tournament. With appearances for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, Northeast Wrestling and a full time roster spot with Ring of Honor this has been the most successful year of Cedric's career so far. To win the most prestegious annual tournament in his home state and earn a shot at NC's most prestegious championships would cap off what's already been a career year for the talented rising star.
ARIK ROYAL: Last year's tournament champion is the only former Weaver Cup winner to be entered this year. In truth, despite a successful tag-team run with Chiva Kid, Royal's career never recovered after last October when he cashed in his tournament prize - the guaranteed shot at the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship - and came up short. Should he win it again he'd be the first man in Weaver Cup history to win it twice and would earn one more shot at the gold and platinum Mid-Atlantic Championship belt.
CECIL SCOTT: The often overlooked Scott is on the biggest career roll of his life right now after scoring a tainted pinfall over former Mid-Atlantic Champion Kamakazi Kid. The fall was overturned but for a few brief moments Cecil held the Mid-Atlantic Title in his hands. He petitioned for and was granted entry into the tournament with his sights set on earning another title shot. While many feel he's a long shot the thing that makes Scott most dangerous is that whenever you see him, his monstrous 400+ pound partner in crime Mecha Mercenary lurks somewhere around ringside.
See how Cecil and Mecha attacked Kamakazi Kid in the middle of a title defense and hear comments from Scott as to why he feels he should be the rightful Mid-Atlantic Champion in this exclusive video:
TREVOR LEE: One of 10 CWF wrestlers who had the chance to qualify for the tournament on July 14th, Trevor defeated the returning Lance Lude to advance to the final 8. But the pressure is on for 1/2 of the Aftermath's "Fun Athletic Guys" as Aftermath front man William L. Cross has mandated that both Trevor and his tag-team partner Ben Tyler MUST win championships by September 15th or Cross will boot them out of the group. If Trevor can score three more tournament wins, he'll win the whole she-bang and score a guaranteed shot at the Mid-Atlantic Championship. It's a long shot but it might be Trevor's best chance to snap his spring-long losing streak and stay in the Aftermath!
Relive the exciting opening match from July 14th as Trevor Lee battled Lance Lude for a spot int he tournament right here on the CWF Mid-Atlantic YouTube page:
K.C. McKNIGHT: "The Diamond" has proclaimed himself for years to be the best wrestler in the Mid-Atlantic region. Despite travelling up and down the eastern coast plying his trade, success in CWF Mid-Atlantic has always eluded him. Some say it's politics, some say it's merely schedule conflicts, some say it's McKnight's own attitude that have prevented him from ever making a true splash in CWF Mid-Atlantic rings. But now as he is weeks away from departing for a lucrative WWE developmental contract McKnight wants one last chance to make an impact in CWF Mid-Atlantic and prove himself as the Carolinas unquestioned best. For him it's not about the title shot, it's about solidifying his reputation.
NICK RICHARDS: The "Young Gun" won a hard-fought back and forth war with the Aftermath's Ben Tyler to qualify for the tournament. Richards is seen by many as a long shot to win the tournament but Fatback's risk taker has shown in the past he can pull out a win in the clutch and is known to thrown caution to the wind and risk his well being to do it. If he stays focused and his reckless risks don't leave him injured, he could shock the Mid-Atlantic.
Richards and Ben Tyler went to war on July 14th with a spot in the Weaver Cup on the line and you can see it for yourself right here:
MATT SMITH: The fast-as-lightning former Rising Generation League Champion outlasted five others in a "last chance" qualifying match to earn the final spot in the tournament. The high flyer is the smallest man in the tournament this year but has won in the past not only with his quickness but surprising KO power. After missing a year due to injury, triumphing in the Weaver Cup would solidify Smith as back on top of his game.
