68 Muncie shifter

Question guys: Does Hurst currently make a shifter body that is a direct replacement for the factory Muncie four speed shifter in a 68 SS427? I would want to use the factory Muncie shifter handle. Anybody do this mod to their car? Looking for better drivability. Work out OK? Source for shifter body? Part number? Thanks so much. Mike L.

Mike,

I changed over to a Hurst shifter many years ago on my '68 Z24 Sport Coupe. The guy who sold me the kit had to go through lots of parts changes to match up my situation (still don't know how he was able to identify it all). Anyway, I still have the 'work sheet' he used to bring everything together...it's attached below in two parts. I couldn't get good pictures of the illustration (as you can see), but I wanted to let you know that I can send you hard copies if you think it could help.

Mike,

I just made pretty decent copies which I will keep for my records, and send you the original. It's a 2-page spread sheet, and just doesn't copy well because you have to 'paste' the two pages together and try to match everything. I'll look for your PM. Don't worry about the "postage and handling".

I had Bruce from Manchester Muncie's in Manchester Iowa rebuild my 69 Biscayne shifter. He does a great job. It's still not a Hurst,and never will be. The shifter works as good as any I've had,or worked on over the years. A a tech at Chevrolet in the early/mid 70's,,these were a very common item in for repair back in the day. Replaced a lot of them,mainly in Chevelle's and Nova's

Hi Gene. I am not building anything. Just tired of the factory Muncie shifter body. It hangs up once in awhile and I end up under the car with a 9/16 inch wrench freeing it up. Just looking for some alternatives. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Mike L.

One thing you can do, is have your Muncie Shifter rebuilt. There is a guy that goes by the name of Chevy Ray. He does great work. Hurst may be better , but if you want to keep it original Chevy Ray is another alternative . I have his address and phone # if you are interested. John
