69 4 Speeds

I have been hitting the car show circuit this summer . I have been asked many times , how many 4 speed 69 Impala SS 427 's were built ? I know the exact number is not known , but do you guys have an approximate estimate ? Every car club group that I meet always asks me to come back , because they don't see any Impala SS 427's . I am having a great time this summer. Thanks for any help . John

How are U doing John U. Let Us see some pictures of Your car. I hear it is done and It is in show condition. Glad to hear it. Our 4 speeds are very Rare. I have Nos Quarters and Fenders with no one to install them. NICK L72

Nick , here you go . I am having a little trouble uploading pictures . I was able to get this one with the help of my wife Lori . I have many more pictures , but for now this is what I can post . I am having a really good time at the car shows this summer . I have made so many new friends , and I have seen many cars , and heard so many good car stories .

My 69 ragtop was born with a 327 4 speed when I tell people it is a factory 4 speed they find it hard to believe. Dan

I had a 69 years back with a 327 Saginaw 4 speed,it was a winter beater I bought cheap

Are these numbers accurate as taken from the SS Musclecar Red Book and Colvin ? Total Full size production all models is 1,168,300.

M20 4 speeds 3448
M21 4 speeds 969
M22 4 speeds 77

546 L72 425HP 's

The M22 was only available with the L72 engine.

That makes any 4 speed optioned full size Chevy a very rare bird .

Correct on the L72 at 546. The 4-spd breakdown dos not differentiate between the motors. However it does show that the L72 had only 168 3-spd automatics. Total 3-spd manuals for all 427's 128 units. And of the 4-spds, only 77 M22's.

Records don't get that granular. Also because the 1969 model year did not differentiate between the sport Cpe or convertible SS as a separate model number. In 69' it was actually an option. With that the preliminary total through Aug of 1969 of 427 4spds for all 69 full size cars was 1,721 units. This includes all 3 HP engines.

All full size cars which include the Impala , Caprice , Bel Air , Biscayne , convertibles , Sport coupes , and Custom coupes with the 335 , 390, and 425 HP , only 1721 4 speeds were built . Wow t;hanks Paul . That seems like a small number for all of these cars. Thanks so much for the help Paul . I wish there was a way to estimate the number of 4 speeds placed in the Z 24 's in 69 John

I understand there are no solid production numbers on 67-69 passenger cars with 4 speeds. I have owned two 1969 Impala SS 427/425 horse 4 speed cars and one 1967 Impala SS 427/385 automatic car over the years ... Food for thought: In the late 1990's, I looked at a documented 1969 Impala sport coupe with 350/300 horse, 4 speed, bucket seats and console (of course it was triple green) ... Where would a car like this fall into the group of production numbers of 1721 ? Or, is that a completely different group of production statistics ? Just curious ... Randy

Randy. Paul states that 1721 4 speed cars were produced including the SS427 Z24 models. The passenger cars including wagons mostly used automatics. The stick cars were a thing of the past except for Us diehard stick drivers. That is why they are so rare. NICK L72

Nick - OK ... That's the part I do not understand. Since 69 was the last year for 4 speed and bucket seat full size cars, there were some odd ball cars like the 350/300 car that I referred to. 4 speeds were not limited to 427 cars ... Thanks, Randy

4 spds were not limited to 427 cars . Years ago I had a 69 Convertible 350/300 hp married to a M20 .

Randy, yes I still have it , and its still in a project state . It keeps getting bumped for others . Frame has been restored as well as suspension . New NOS sheet metal as well

Hey Guys - Here's a few photos of HMC's 69 Impala SS L72 (circa 1979) ... In the first photo, if look past the 69 to the right, you will see the neighbors 55 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery (327/365 horse, Muncie 4 speed and 4.56 posi)... it was a local street racing warrior ! Directly in front of the 69, there is a 67 Dodge Coronet R/T Convertible and a 1950 Pontiac Sedan Delivery ... Just another day in the neighborhood in 1979 ! Things sure have changed since then ...
