I have a '66 floor shift tilt column with some issues. First it's not in the car. The issue is I can't get the shaft to turn/spin within the column. I suspect the bearing or bearings are dry and/or seized. I don't want to mess with it too much before getting advice on diagnostics & possible repairs. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Is the column or bearings rusty? I would say to spray the bearings with a rust penetrate. Start to rock the shaft back and forth to free up the bearings. You will have to disassemble the column if it does not move. The bearings will have to be replaced anyhow. Can You tilt the column? Remove the turn signal switch and take out the bolts holding the collar to the column. the bearing should slide on the shaft. Lube the shaft if it does not. NICK L72 427impalasportcoupe
