68 fastback body style & production numbers

Hi all, I've been all over Google trying to find the correct body style name for my 68 Impala fastback. Is there a body style name difference for the fastback or custom coupe? Trying to find my specific body style production numbers.

In 1968 the chevrolet literature states the two body styles are Sport Coupe or Custom Coupe. I have never seen production numbers for them but I would guess the sport coupe was more popular.

Production numbers needed for 1968 Impala for both variants:
16447 2 door Custom Coupe
16487 2 door Sport Coupe

It would also be interesting to see the 1968 Caprice 2 door numbers 16647 - if you have them.

Thanks Paul. Using these numbers it looks like custom coupes were slightly more popular than the sport coupe. 55% for Custom vs. 45% for Sport. Using these percentages and applying them to Z24 cars with the generally accepted 10% for convertibles we can make some fairly accurate assumptions for Z24 production. Of the 1778 cars produced, 880 would be Custom coupes, 720 would be Sport coupes and 178 are convertibles. Any way you look at it, a very rare car.

Thanks for the 'analysis'...we have nothing else to go on with these 1968 Z24's. Wonder if buyers were even looking for SS427's when they went to the showroom...or did they order them? I bought my '68 as a used car in October 1968, with 2600 odometer miles. Cost me $2850 plus $25 for the 50,000-mile warranty. I thought at the time that I would have liked a Custom coupe; but I'm glad that it is a Sport coupe...to me, the 67-68 fast backs have the best styling.

Hey Sluggo, Thanks for the info. Would you say the Sport Coupe is the fastback and the Custom Coupe is the standard 2 door? or the other way around? Thanks - Max

The sport coupe has the fastback styling but GM never called it a fastback. Since the Custom Coupe was new for 1968, I would not call it the standard. Remember, beginning in 1965 the "fastback" was the only hard top body style available on Impala. That's what people were used to seeing. The caprice was only available as a 4 door in 1965 but in '66 - '68 it had the Custom Coupe roofline. I guess people who wanted the caprice roofline but couldn't afford the premium price now had an option.

I think the opposite...a lot of buyers were choosing the Custom Coupe because it "imitated" the Caprice.
