Snarfy,
When I was working in the Pittsburgh area in the early '80's, I was able to find a complete hidden HL setup for my '68 Z24. I didn't know that the radiator support was "stamped out", so I had to do it to my own during re-installation. But I got the headlight switch, and even the two little pieces next to the running lights! It took me several hours to dismantle at the junk yard, but that was good because it helped me remember how to reinstall in my car. Of course, I replaced all the hoses/clamps.
Some years later, I removed all the verticals from the two grills; and had to do the same to the HL covers. Attached is a front view of my ride. The cost from the salvage yard: $50!!
Hey Bill, hope you are staying safe and well in down-town Dayton Ohio ... The car still looks great … I have a question I've been meaning to ask you for a while ... How did you go about ensuring a good strong bond that wasn't going to move and damage the paint when you blended the alloy rear quarter extension and the steel quarter panel together … Cheers Glenn
My wife and I are staying inside...except for the grocery store. We are doing OK so far...hope you and yours are, too. The internet really comes in handy under the current circumstances.
There is a little challenge with the rear "caps"...they are alloy ('pot metal') as you mention; but since there is no stress between the caps and the fender sheet metal, mine have 'held up' very well. Can't tell you how the seams were filled in (about 12 years now), but I get a feeling it did not involve any heat/metallic filler...maybe Sluggo knows.
The front seams - connecting the upper apron with the front fenders - are a different matter (see the photo). There definitely is stress at those joints, but the pieces are (of course) bolted together and then welded. I was told if I had to jack up the front end, to do so by placing the floor jack under the coil spring(s) rather than the side (frame) of the car. There is a very slight "wave" on the passenger side, but you won't see it in the photo.
I apologize for 'ranting on'...hope I helped a little.
