Door panels

Posted by Ken P User icon on 4/4/2020, 5:39 am

Has anyone ever sent door panels to SMS to be repoped? Was going to send my '69 Biscayne panels to them. They said to cut off the top metal pieces and send only them in. Just didn't want to destroy mine than SMS tells me they have no Biscayne patterns. They are offering 19% off for a short time.

1968 Belair panels from SMS. I sent the complete old panels to them. Took 6 months but they fit and looked perfect. The window cranks are '66 Impala but look much better than the correct plastic knob versions.

Ken , I had SMS do my 69 Biscayne panels awhile back ( 5-6 years ago) . They did an excellent job , and matched the Biscayne pattern exactly . They do require the steel upper rail panels ( unique to the 2 dr post). Please be aware that the job could take 12-16 months , possibly longer ! ( I waited 18 months ) I have an extra set of 2 dr post upper steel rails available if you decide to go that route. That way you can still keep your panels on your car until the new ones arrive.

Ken. My car took 15 months with OEM quarters and fenders to get body work and painted. You are lucky that They are not charging You storage. I am lucky that I preserved My door panels and quarters. They have to fasten the boards onto the metal rails and create the vinyl pattern by using molds. Good luck! NICK L72

I had SMS redo door panels for a 69 Impala SS and for a 69 Biscayne. Excellent work product but ditto comments on the waiting period. More than a year! May be different based on current conditions, presently? Check with them!

You should ask why so long. Just wondering if it's a long process, or is it a side job when their real business is not busy. Just seems like a long wait.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did they quote you for a set of Biscayne door panels? Are they doing fronts and rears? Wonder if they could do them for a Bel Air? I don't have any extra metal tops or center emblems the Bel Air has, nor are mine bad... but would love to have a "spare" set made as finding another nice set of originals would probably be next to impossible.

$900 for the 4 door panels for a 2 door sedan. You might want to find a donor set for the top metal pieces and emblems.
