Besides, whatever you enjoy doing isn't wasting your life. I always get a little worked up when I hear someone say sitting in front of a TV is a waste of time. I spend my time doing what makes me happy. Watching races and sports makes me happy, and if it makes you happy I don't get how that's wasting your life. Not a better feeling in the world than being happy and content.
I have a cousin my age that's trying to talk me into buying a metal detector, and going out with him on the weekends. I went with him one time, and hated it. He seems to enjoy, but I was miserable. No thanks! Have another buddy that's into Civil War reenactment. No thanks! Another buddy that has a nicer older Mustang that enjoys going to car shows. No thanks! Don't get me wrong I've always had nice older and newer muscle cars, but never understood sitting in a parking lot or field at a car show. Those cars were made to enjoy an open road. I think all of those guys hobbies are great because those hobbies make them happy, but they're not for me. I enjoy fishing (I'm my father's son), but I always hear from people "can't you just buy fresh fish at the grocery store".
My mom & dad both died young, and the one thing I got out of that is do what you enjoy doing in life because life's short, and if you enjoy watching races and sports, so be it.
I went over to the horse track by my house for a couple of hours this afternoon, and I guarantee you if I called everybody I knew including all of my relatives, friends, co-workers, and neighbors I couldn't of found one person that wanted to go to the track with me this afternoon. Do I care about that, or did that stop me from going? Nope, went to the horse track for a couple of hours this afternoon by myself, and had a wonderful time.
The cousin that's trying to get me to buy a metal detector has a son that was a computer nerd. My cousin was always hearing from people "aren't you worried how much Jake is sitting in front of a computer?". Jake is I believe 26 or 27 years old, and has a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from the University of Michigan, and is an executive at Twitter in San Francisco. Just the stock he's earned the few years he's been at Twitter makes him worth millions. The other afternoon he sent his dad a text of a picture of himself in Twitter's private suite at a San Francisco Giants game, and added "another tough day at work. How's your day going?"
Where some parents thought Jake was wasting his life in front of a computer my cousin let him do it because he knew that's what he enjoyed, and that's what life is all about. I guess if my cousin wanted to be a dick he could ask those same parents "didn't you think my son was wasting his time sitting in front of a computer because your son was playing little league baseball. How's your son's baseball career doing?"
