After the destruction left by Hurricane Patricia in October 2015 to our village of La Manzanilla, our breezeway was heavily damaged. Everyone was busy repairing, re-constructing the damage left by the hurricane to their own personal properties and business's. The breezeway was far from anyone's mind including the delegacion, to even think of repairing the damage to the paving stones, planters, walls and concrete seating areas.
A very dedicated group of people organized the Fiesta del Arte event. The day was a cerebration of artists in and around LaManzanilla which brought in people from the surrounding areas. The extra proceeds of the event where channeled to the Breezeway Mosaic project. The project was headed by Mazinka Rutherford, our well known local Mosaic artist. The plan was to add 2 new concrete benches, repair and fix the damaged 3 benches to the same new design, repair the stucco walls and planters, paint everything with new vibrant colors and to install four mosaic murals.
This plan needed more money, more volunteers, materials and artists. Under Mazinka's stewardship and drive to finish the project a great number of people stepped up. Rey for repairing and making new benches, Paul Johnson for cleaning, painting and helping install the panels, Howie and Jen for donating extra tiles for the murals, Monte Morgan and Mazinka for the bike rack, ( a second one has just been sponsored by a generous donor), Carolyn, Casey for cleaning and painting, Lety for helping with creative decisions, Lisa Fern for replanting the flowerbeds, Stephanie (Helping Hands Bookstore) for donations and all the private donations received from the community. Thank you for all your help and support.
In 2017 the first panel, a collaboration between Mazinka and Debra was installed and the second one created by Mazinka was completed in 2018. The third panel was done by Rmac , installed in March 2019, and the last panel just finished and installed by Debra Hamilton. These three artists provided their materials, labour and art space free of charge for the project.
If you wish to see some of the other art work done by these artists and for any further information, please contact them directly:
