However, our current masks can be made effective by adding a layer of non-woven material to them, like coffee filters. The cotton makes the masks breathable and comfortable but allows the buggers to get through the mesh of 3 microns while the bugs are only 1 micron in size. This is why masks were deemed ineffective, they let the bugs come through.
Also, the masks need to fit snugly around the nose and face so that there is no space for the droplets to drop into the mask. These suggestions are especially important when around a sick person, but since we can't tell who is infected, guess what?
