Doing something that turns out to be unnecessary is forgiven as there was action taken and the people feel safer. Its a damned if you do and damned if you don't thing.
The way its looking now is Omicron is not a concern but the fat lady has not sung yet.
What would have been preferable on Omicron and future variants, is that the news media didn't get people all excited before the data was in. They could have focused on the possibility that it would turn out well, but that doesn't get the viewers/advertising dollars as does the bad prediction.
Its basically the nature of the beast, but mental health is going to be putting some pressure on that business model soon as the instability of life is taking its toll. The pressure will come from the government, from people tuning out or both.
A bit off this specific topic but my focus lately has been on the idea of no profit off pandemics. Until that is the policy this pandemic with its cascade of variants is just the beginning. No profit from pandemics has been proposed from the beginning, as this situation progresses I think more people will come around to giving it some serious consideration. The basic realization is that we go together (global) or not at all.
