I believe that is the day that La Manzanilla got hit with the largest earthquake in their history.
I remember it well, as I was preparing to come see the final new construction of my house on the mountain above Concha Molida. When I arrived after the event I was pleasently surprised that my new home had survived without any damage.
Alas, the town was not so lucky. THere were reports of 80 structures desroyed and the flat land in the center of town, up to 2 blocks in, had been submerged by the ocean upsurge caused by the resultant tsunami.
The whole town was full of army personnel helping with the recovery including humvees, personnel carriers, backhoes and bulldozers. The spot where the casino sits now was the old corral and it was full of destruction debris 20 feet high. The streets were full of personal belongings of homes that had been detroyed or hit by the tsunami.
The cleanup lasted a long time, but alas, the town sprung back to an acceptable level of normalcy, as it has continued to do up to this day, after any and all challenging events.
La Manzanilla continues to survive and thrive, as it has since its inception.
Viva La Manzanilla!
