Red Tide Posted by Sara Baldwin on March 22, 2022, 6:51 pm This morning there was a a wide swath of red gunk looping along the. Ocean. I didn’t see it until I was swimming through it . I’m wondering how toxic it is.

Red tides can trigger an allergic reaction in some folks, and cause breathing difficulties. Dogs are especially affected by toxins associated with red tides. The main reason I don't like swimming during red tide events is that they seem to attract jellyfish, which are very hard to see.

My sunglasses were screening it out so I coul coudn't see it before. The bioluminescence was lovely last night - hoping for more tonight. I'm guessing that theres a connection between the two interesting phenomenons?

"Dinoflagellates use bioluminescence as a form of predator avoidance. That means that when a small fish tries to eat the algae, the algae produce this beautiful blue light that attracts bigger predators which instead eat the small fish."
