Dog bite Posted by Neal on February 22, 2023, 9:26 am I was walking back from dinner at Chantli Mar yesterday evening when I was confronted by two large aggressive dogs by the old hotel. One of them decided to see how my leg tasted. It must not have been too tasty as he only bite once. I’m used to being run at by dogs on the beach but this was over the top. I was really concerned the second dog would join in. Be careful out there.

I guess people should start walking with walking sticks in the off-chance of an encounter of this type ~ there seems to be more occurrences every year. I hope your bite heals well; maybe have Dr. Marta assess?

The one that bite me was black and the size of a good sized lab. In fact it looked like a lab or lab mix. The other one which actually was scarier was a pit bull mix of some sort. Heavy head big shoulders tan and white with some black . I think I have seen them in the area of the old hotel before. These are both big strong dogs that could do a lot of damage.

May be hard to get there. Wasp and Hornet spray can work very well as a readily available substitute.

What an awful experience! 😔 I know the area by the Old Hotel pretty well - there are really no people living right there, other than some beach lot care takers and their families and their dogs have not been a problem before. However, I have seen people “squatting” at the Old Hotel, in the past, not sure if there is anyone there now, who owns those three dogs. Another possibility is that these 3 dogs were just here with someone from out of town and do not live here. One can only hope. 🙏🏽 I try to always carry a stick with me when I walk with my big dog, be it in town, on the manglare road or on the beach. When I feel better, I am planning to check out the area around the Old Hotel and see what is going on. With a big stick and pepper spray. Anneli

Re: Dog bite deterrent Posted by M Morgan on February 23, 2023, 7:49 pm, in reply to "Re: Dog bite" Most Mexican dogs in this area understand the body language of a person bending over to pick up a rock or a few. Experience teaches dogs that a person with rocks will probably throw them. This simple action will usually affect dogs turning tail and scootin', even without actually needing to throw rocks.

I saw Dr Rodrigues. He is of the opinion that rabies has been eradicating in dogs in Mexico so no need for rabies shots. I’m not entirely comfortable with this but he didn’t offer prophylactic rabies treatment as an option. He did put me on some antibiotics
