Who or what soils the Beach the most? Posted by Anneli on October 6, 2023, 1:59 pm This photo from FB says a lot, I think. I try my best to clean up the beach as much as possible, while walking, and I must say there is much more human trash than animal excrement. If I find any, I cover it up. 🫶

The dogs do use the beach as their dumping ground, literally. There is human trash, but nothing comparable to the picture supplied and it is not representative of our beach. Some trash comes in from the ocean from whatever source it originated. Many beachgoers pick up their trash, put it in plastic trash bags and leave it for the garbage truck. Unfortunately, loose dogs and wild animals tear apart the trash bags and the wind blows it everywhere. I have had to pick up 20X more trash on the road behind my house than on the beach. I built a wooden frame so the animals can not knock over the cans but still have trouble. I have also seen do-gooders walking the beach pick up trash in the wet sand and throw it up much higher on the dry sand so as not to go back into the ocean. Unfortunately, we are not going to make all dog owners more responsible. We are not going to solve the trash bags being torn open or the occasional litterbug. Sadly, I have never been attacked by litter. I have been attacked by dogs off-leash many times. But that is not allowed to be discussed nor shamed.

Or garbage materials left behind? It’s easier to pick up human trash ie plastic wrappers etc than dog sh#t. Plus you are less likely to get any disease like ringworm etc from human generated trash than stepping in dog sh#t. I am a dog owner and cannot stand dog owners who do not pick up after their dogs. It’s worse than a pop bottle left on the beach, both are irresponsible behaviour but give me a pop bottle to pick up rather than dog sh#t anytime.

When I lived on Concha Molida behind Restaurant Rincon, I noticed some restaurants on the beach - not Rincon - would leave the days trash that had fallen off the tables on the sand and would not pick up the litter until the following morning. So yes, the south end of the bay is going to be worse. I do not know if some of the restaurants are still doing it, but it is unfair to allege the people trash the beach when the main culprit might be a few restaurants. JMHO

When I first arrived in La Manzanilla, I camped on the beach in Horno de Catrin for several months.I can't begin to calculate the number of cigarette butts and bottle caps I pulled out of the sand EVERY DAY. Let's just say BEAUCOUP; there's seemingly no end to these two items. I suppose people carelessly toss them everywhere thinking to themselves that they're so little, they're of no consequence. Sift through a section of sand sometime and see how many you can unearth with a minimal amount of effort. And definitely keep a plastic sandwich bag in your pocket for wrappers and stuff. Don't just bury sh** in the ground with your foot when you think no one's watching. Seriously. Some of you ain't got no couth.

That out of the way, I wish to observe that Mother Nature and the Pacific Ocean are much more accepting of poop than of plastic (including butts and caps and all the rest of it.) This is NOT at all to suggest that we leave our dogs' poop; I do, however, suggest that the real damage to the environment has nothing to do with what our dogs leave behind. We would all be better served, of course, if each of us took responsibility for our own crap.
