Are steel wheels the best option for winter tires in Canada?

Last winter I kept worrying about curb damage and road salt ruining my alloy rims. A coworker suggested using steel wheels for my snow tires instead. Are they really the most practical choice for Canadian winters?

Separate winter wheels seem sensible when roads are covered with salt, slush, and potholes for months at a time. Steel rims may not look as stylish, but durability and lower replacement costs can matter much more during harsh weather.
