Can clogged dryer vents cause fires even when the dryer appears to be working normally?

My dryer takes forever to finish a load lately but it still gets hot and the clothes come out dry. Last week I heard a weird rattling sound and started worrying. Can a clogged dryer vent actually start a fire even if everything seems to run okay on the outside?

I clean my dryer vent every spring and fall without fail. Once I pulled out a giant clump of lint that was almost blocking the entire pipe. Since then I’ve been more careful about checking the hose connection behind the machine too. It only takes a few minutes but it makes a big difference in how well the dryer performs and how safe you feel using it.

Totally possible. Our dryer was running fine but the vent pipe in the wall was packed with lint. I checked out the details at https://dryerventcleaningtoday.ca/can-a-dryer-catch-on-fire-how-dryer-fires-start-and-how-to-prevent-them/ and followed their advice on how to inspect and clean it properly. We had the whole system professionally cleaned right after. The dryer now runs much quieter and faster, and I don’t stress every time I use it. It’s scary how quickly lint buildup can happen without you noticing. Definitely worth checking yours soon.
