July 28th, on a three hour trip, a guest from Florida caught around 25 bass on Honeoye, using wacky style Bass Pro Stikos with a 3/0 hook and no weight on 8lb. test line. He is an experienced angler, so the catch rate was quite high.
An algae bloom has started, and with the hot weather, it is getting worse. It doesn't seem to have hurt the fishing, though.
Andy and Jean from NJ drove up to spend a day fishing, and they were not disappointed. Both have been fishing for years, and they managed to load the boat with bass. The morning bite was best, but it slowed some around 11:30. For the balance of the day, they averaged 4-5 fish per hour. They were quite surprised that the bass fishing is that good in NY.
Conesus Lake Tuesday night tournaments have changed to a 3 fish limit. On August 2nd, the fish were definitely not in a biting mood. Monday produced some big fish and Tuesday, at the same locations, only small fish bit. Monday was hot and sunny and Tuesday evening, it clouded up. Winning weights were good for 3 fish, but the overall catch rates were down.
Canandaigua Lake gave up some very nice bass on Friday, August 5th. Wacky rigged trick worms seemed to be the best bait. Saturday, my wife and I, fished a small tournament and the wacky rig worked, but the bass wanted a color different from the prefish color. Using a darker color made the bait more visible in the low light/overcast conditions. We spent the entire day at the south end of the lake and brought over 20lbs. to the scales for a 2 lb. average. Big bass for the tournament was a 6.22lb. largemouth.
Good fishing
