John and Susan from Cleveland, Ohio spent two half days and one full day on Honeoye Lake with me last week. Tuesday, we had to delay our start as a storm came through. When the skies cleared, we fished the North end and caught several nice fish. We moved around and fished untill dark and added a few pickerel and smallmouth bass.
Wednesday started slow, and we noticed the water temperature had dropped 5.5 to 6 degrees from Tuesday. It was not the typical Honeoye bite, and they averaged a bass every 15 to 20 minutes. We would find areas holding active fish and areas with no activity. By days end, they had boated a conserative 60 to 70 fish. A fun day, but they worked hard for their catch.
Thursday, we went South as the wind was quite strong. Once again the activity was slow, and we kept changing baits. Midmorning, the fish either turned on, or we found the right colored bait, but the action remained steady until they had to leave for home. The baits we used were Bass Pro Stikos in watermelonseed and greenpumpkin, Zoom Trick worms in watermelonseed and Kudzu. John also caught fish on Bassbones in watermelonseed.
I had to make a trip to Geneva for trolling motor parts and while driving past the Canandaigua launch at the North end of the lake, there were 80 to 100 rigs in the parking lot. It appears that the ramp has reopened for your boating pleasure.
Be safe, wear your life vest. Good fishing.
