The heat races and the features had plenty of spins, thrill, and spills. Feature #1 was the slowly growing sport compact class. Camron Spangler looked like he was going to take down his first win at the age of 13. But some of that racing luck came into play as Spangler's car started slowing down with a couple of laps to go. Camron's four car lead slipped away as he had to park the #12 compact and watch Ranai Toler go on to collect the win. Finishing 2nd was Tom Dutton followed by Michael Cody. The heat race winner was Ranai Toler.
The second feature of the night saw 15 IMCA modifieds take the green with Eddie Farley leading the first few laps in his #51. Aaron Spangler took the first spot away from Farley on lap 3 and started putting a little daylight between the #16 and the rest of the pack. But a former National Champion in this class started gaining on the leader. After a few close laps of racing, Zane Devilbiss eased the #18 car into the lead and pulled away for another feature win at Aztec Speedway. Spangler held onto 2nd with Regan Tafoya a strong 3rd. Fourth and fifth were decided on the last lap as Nick Nelson and Danny Bradford slipped past Eddie Farley in that order. Sixth on back were: Farley, Charlie Felker, Dereck Rhoden, Shane Devilbiss, Allen Bradley and Jeff Jennings. David Davis and Ryan Spangler were DNFs. The heat race winners were: Regan Tafoya and Eddie Farley.
Now the carnage begins.
The hobby stocks had 9 cars at the start and finished with only 3 running. Jordan Hockenhull was in front for a couple of laps. But Luke Klemm brought his #6 up for the lead on lap 3. Jessica Radojits and Kelly Klemm tangled out of turn 2 and slammed the backstretch wall. Both drivers were ok but the cars needed the wreckers to get them to their pits. The race resumed after the red flag was lifted with Luke Klemm and Freddie Brooks racing for the win. Randy Dorsett and Paul Dorsett were also in the mix until a four car pile up in turn one. Patricia Phillips required the wrecker for her damaged car to get to the pits. Jordan Hockenhull followed on his own power but could not return. After 4 yellows and one red flag the race ended with Freddie Brooks winning followed by Randy Dorsett and Paul Dorsett. Heat race winners were: Luke Klemm and Randy Dorsett.
The Stock car feature had lots of action...wild crashes and some good racing too. Josh Turnbull lead the first two laps until a four car crash brought out the first yellow. Mike Farley, Stephan Carey, Skyler Heath and Frankie Hendershot were involved. Carey had the least damage of the bunch with Hendershot the most. Frankie went to the hot pits minus a lot of right side sheet metal (plastic) and a flat. Heath's front nose piece was gone and Farley did not return for several laps. The race saw some more spins but finally settled down into a very exciting finish. The Hendershot brothers swapped the lead a few times before Frankie Hendershot finally moved in front and took the win. Kenny Hendershot was 2nd with Richard Trujillo 3rd. Stephan Carey came from the back with about 5 to go for 4th and 5th went to Traci Jennings. The rest of the field was: Skyler Heath, Josh Turnbull, Jerald Wright, Johnny Livingston, and Mike Farley. Heat race winners were: Mike Farley and Kenny Hendershot.
The sport modified feature had 17 cars and about the same number of yellows. Two restarts were needed to get the race going. Two cars were out before an official lap was scored. Juanita Faddis was in front for two laps with Joey Klemish putting the Mopar car #22 in front for six laps. Julie Boettler moved by Klemish on lap nine and went on to collect her 9th feature win for 2014. Klemish held on for 2nd with Brian Carey in 3rd and 4th was Rex Higgins with Juanita Faddis 5th. Sixth on back were: Glenn Spangler, Luke McCormick, Roger Cordary, Dylan Terry, Ryan Henley, Clint Proffitt, Killian Carey, Anthony Ludwig, and RL Henley. Heat race winners were: Joey Klemish, Juanita Faddis and Brian Carey.
The Dr. Mann Four Corners Family Dental sponsored Dash for Cash had four modifieds going for the $200. Zane Devilbiss made it a clean sweep for the night as he pocketed the money in this dash.
Mid season champs were announced. Zane Devilbiss in modifieds, Brian Carey in sport modifieds, Kenny Hendershot in stock cars, Austin Maxwell in the sport compacts and Andy Hockenhull in the late models.
The night was quite wilder than I made it appear in print....whew! The NMMRA non wing sprints will be the featured class at Aztec Speedway. Also the New Mexico Mini Sprints will be on hand along with our regular classes. I'll see you there!
